After listening to BLOODRAINBOW'S album, "Upheaval", I became confused. "Upheaval" is a rollercoaster that features many twists, loops, slopes, and turns that leave you staggered. It is truly bizarre! The album starts off with some bongos, fiesta music, and prominent bass lines found in technical Death Metal. I immediately envisioned myself in a scene from Breaking Bad-more specifically, Los Pollos Hermanos. Not really sure why, but it has that vibe. The next track "Debauchery, Fall, Expulsion" has doom metal elements with a Technical Death underbelly, but nothing that is compelling.  The album doesn't get interesting until the track "Harpoon and Sonar."

"Stalingrad" is the strongest track on the album. I immediately sensed an IRON MAIDEN influence. There are a lot of instruments being used but it is executed nicely. I admire BLOODRAINBOW for taking a risk and using different instruments and styles that are usually not associated with Death Metal. I absolutely adore the saxophone use in "Stalingrad" during mid song. A dilemma that I am hearing is that the vocals are mediocre and do not quite fit with the music. The "clean" vocals are a major turn off.

"Indestructible Armor" is an enjoyable track and shows the potential this band has. The horns are used nicely in this track and the rumbling bass is exquisite, but the gargling "clean" vocals undermine it.

"Upheaval" is like pizza topped with toothpaste; some people may not mind that combination, however "Upheaval" is not for everybody. And with respect, BLOODRAINBOW made it a mission to use a bunch of different styles and instruments in their music when they first formed, which is fine, however, the execution and timing needs some editing because it sounds like noise most of the time. The potential is there and I am curious to understand the methods to their madness.<
