Dying Breed
BlackRain
Hard/Glam Metal, as everyone already is full of hearing/reading the same words, was commercial in the USA during the 80's, fell from its heaven during Grunge Rock invasion of the 90's, and moved to Europe, having success and acceptance during the last 10-15 years. That's the reason for such invasion of bands from the genre coming from Europe, while the USA stays with the old names of the past. And BLACKRAIN, a French quartet, comes to insult the politically correct adepts with "Dying Breed", their latest album.
Their sixth album presents that fine, good, melodic and outrageous (for the political correctness' followers) mix of Glam Rock features with the weight and power of Hard Rock. Names as RATT, MÖTLEY CRÜE and some others in this way could be used as references to their musical work. In other worlds: it's nasty and aggressive, but with excellent melodies and remarkable choruses. The technical approach is very good (as can be heard on the bass guitar playing on the song "Dying Breed"), their songs are really fun, and the feeling of the 80's is presented as well, but in a modern format.
Chris Laney (the album's producer) can be said as the one who created the aggressive and nasty energy of "Dying Breed", because the sound quality that was built has the modern clarity that allows the listener to understand the band's music, but has a touch of organic feeling pulsing on the songs as well. Yes, it's truly good, and fits perfectly on what the album needed to be.
Ten shots are given by the band, with all of them hitting the bull's eye. "Dying Breed" is a Glam onslaught, using energetic catchy guitars and vocals (and what good work of the backing vocals as well), "Hellfire" and "Blast Me Up" (both songs shares the same elements: a mix between Glam Metal melodies with German Metal weight, and with a solid rhythmic work from bass guitar and drums), "Like Me" (an accessible song with some Punk Rock influences), and the powerful and "Public Enemy" are the best ones, besides the entire album is truly excellent. If the readers are interested in fun and enjoying a very good time, "Dying Breed" was done for you. Hear it out loud, enjoy the trip, and understand that BLACKRAIN won't let this breed die.
