Warping Structure
Black Wound
When one follows interviews with Quorthon (of BATHORY) during the 90s, when asked about the lo-fi sonorities some bands were using in Black Metal, he couldn’t understand why doing so in a time of accessible technology. Such thought is simply depicting that bands recorded things in a filthy way in the past due the lack of better conditions. Even BLACK SABBATH first album has such poor sonority due the lack of resources (low money budge means small time on studio, small number of tracks for the recordings, and the use of cheap sound technicians). In Doom Metal ways, many musicians have the wrong idea that things must be as filthy as possible will give an organic feeling (what acts as CANDLEMASS proved to be a wrong thought). And the Swedish trio BLACK WOUND shows on “Warping Structure” that it needs some maturing.
Produced by William Kaloczy (the band’s bassist/vocalist, and he did the artwork as well) and Gustaf Magnusson (the band’s drummer), the sonority is putrid and full of overloaded and poor instrumental tunes (especially on the drums), in a way that reminds an extreme approach of what PARADISE LOST did on “Lost Paradise” and ANATHEMA on “Serenades” days. Their music is prejudiced by the lack of full understanding of what’s being played, what depicts a need for a producer on their next releases, to help them to have a better sonority for the trio’s music, and to find better tunes and effects. Musically, the trio plays a form of Doom Death Metal, or in other words, a slow form of playing Death Metal, as it was done by pioneers as PARADISE LOST, ANATHEMA and MY DYING BRIDE did on their prime. But they need to mature things a bit more, because it’s not on the level they can do (it’s clear that they have potential, but’s hidden under a blind obedience of limits, when sometimes, to break limits is the best to do). It’s just a matter of sharpening their musical efforts in a better way.
When dealing with “Dread”, “Warping Structure” (here some Old School Death Metal faster parts are truly good), “Rag”, “Sworn”, “Trench Blast” and “Vermin Firstborn” (even being a song with more than 10 minutes, it has some pretty good rhythmic efforts), one can have the idea that they’re a good act, but that seems to lack the due knowledge of what to do with their music. Again: a producer would help them to sharp things in a better way. For now, “Warping Structure” is a good first coming, but BLACK WOUND has too much to offer and it’s a pity to see it being lost due the lack of a proper sonority and a bit more maturing…
