Nourishing the Disaster to Come

Berlial

The album exists in the space where anger, sadness, and longing don’t just coexist, but feed into one another, creating a storm of sound that is both deeply cathartic and painfully fragile. This is an album that doesn’t simply express emotions—it struggles with them, wrestles with them, lets them collide and merge in unpredictable ways. It leaves the listener standing in the wreckage, with the understanding that some wounds never fully heal, some desires are never fulfilled, and some emotions will always rage inside us, tangled together in ways we may never fully understand.

From Bandcamp, “French Evocative Black Metal duo BERLIAL are proud to present their sophomore album "Nourishing the Disaster to Come.” This new creature was built with a sort of cinematic narrative. Its atmospheres, the samples, the spoken speeches, the music built like a wall of sound, make everything extreme, oppressive and delirious but at the same time with a truly unique oniric dimension.” The album has six songs, and “The Last Dance” is first. The opening tones are almost jovial, but there is a tension occupying the background. A thickened Black Metal sound follows, spewing from the mouth of a foul beast. From there, it darkens, and holds a dissonant line that rides the edge of consciousness and dreams, never quite giving way to one or the other.

“Nouveau Monde” begins with piano notes and what I would call a fairly neutral feeling…not happy, and not sad, and it moves forward with a distorted riff and harsh vocals that speak of somber feelings. The anger grows, and so does the melody. They meet in marriage like a willing couple. “We Deserve to Fall Again” is the lengthy song on the album, and has more tangled webs of various sounds that just come together. The odd thing is, you don’t even notice that they are on a trajectory to meet and merge until they are done. The skies are constantly shifting from greys to black and back again, and sometimes they are angry, and other times, sad. Keyboards hold the song together.

“Ivresse De La Finitude” begins with gentle but tense tones, and the wall of sound explodes in like a bomb. The anger in the vocals resonates deeply in your soul. The Blackgaze elements really come out in this song also. The horrid bite of venom in the title track is real, but so are the glorious melodies. These two things can exist in perfect harmony, like they do in this song. It moves from lit to completely on fire, as the intensity is dialed up. “Le Néant Pour Éternité” closes the album, and it provides some room to breathe, and relax. Inviting you into its warm embrace, you almost don’t notice that it is picking your pocket at the same time and sliding a blade into your back.
