Aton Five
Aton Five
From Bandcamp, "We are an instrumental Progressive Rock/Metal band formed in 2014. Avoiding both the wanton reiteration of the past and the overindulgence in production, we aspire to say something new in the genre." The album has five songs, and "Alienation" is first. What immediately stands out to me is the technical nature of the music. Keys and guitars move forwards and backwards into the spotlight while the bassist holds down the bottom end with the drummer. At times, the music even has a Classical twinge to it. It passes through the clouds and in and out of the light along its path.
"Naked Void" has tense tones, mostly from the eerie leads above that mysterious keyboard melody. What I like best so far is the balance of the instruments in the music. Each musician is more than capable of taking the lead, but it's the way they interact with one another that is most striking. "Clepsydra" translates to "an ancient time-measuring device worked by a flow of water." It's a smooth, short, and somewhat dark offering, with steady bass thumps and a rich supply of keys. "Danse Macabre" is a guitar driven song with doses of backing keys and a thick bottom end. The piano notes are especially well-done here...these guys have talent, that is for sure.
The 22-minute "Lethe" closes the album. It translates to "a river in Hades whose water when drunk made the souls of the dead forget their life on earth." Some psychedelic tones open the song as it slowly crawls forth with steadier tones. From there, the interchange of lead guitar and keys taking charge is amazing, as each has something different to offer. It shifts around the halfway mark, with much of the sonority dropping off in place of smooth tones. Bass guitar then picks back up the melody, and the lead notes take on a Classical sound once again. They finish with a display of musicianship not often heard.
As advertised, this album was indeed a breath of fresh air in the genre of Progressive Metal. Not wanting to reproduce the past, the band ventures out into uncharted territory, with a variety of instruments and leading tones. Through it all, they maintain a core value of experimentation and throwing caution to the wind.
