Atlases - Between the Day and I album cover

From their EPK, "The fact that ATLASES from Finland sound different has its reasons. Besides the "normal instrumentation" of a Metal band, the musicians from Pori also work with electronic drum pads and keyboards. Both are not just additional accessories, but an integral part of the musical self-image of this Nordic group. In addition, there is the creative demand to go further aesthetically and sonically than is usual in modern Post-Metal. In the cinematic soundscapes ATLASES are creating you can lose yourself completely." The album has ten songs.

"Eyelids of the New Dawn" is the first. A heavy electronica swirls followed by an even heavier riff. Harsh vocals follow, along with some cleans, and there is a balance between the aggressive tones and more atmospheric ones. It makes the heavier tones seem almost cavernous. "Singulars" has another very deep bottom end. There are melodic cleans in the chorus, but the sound keeps an aggressive bite to it. "Silent Threads" takes an expansive breath in the beginning, allowing the song some room to develop. Clean vocals are first, and there is a fancy little melody behind it all. Even the harsh vocals are littered with melodies.

"Earthshine" has a very charming sound to it. The way the band works with melody excellent, because I don't want to hear ten blistering songs, one after another. The segue to a more ardent passage is seamless. "Mosaic of Silence" has a more weighted and aggressive edge from a fast-moving riff and almost Deathcore like vocals. That main riff is punishing and they drive it home, but the song isn't without some melodic moments either. "Save Room" has charming melodies that remind me of drifting off to sleep while listening to the soft crash of waves...it's very peaceful. But the heavier moments are absolutely brutal. "Intermission" is a short segue, consisting of expansive, beautiful keyboard notes. Close your eyes, and let it whisk you away. "Verses" is another short song that features heavy, punishing tones along with some melodic moments in the chorus. Again, the transitions are very well done.

"Imperial Dark" has some more tender moments to go along with the heavy low end. The harsh vocals are absolutely filthy. "Ties to Distance" closes the album. It has a smooth mixture of aggressive music and vocals with melodic moments. Of all the things that ATLAS does well on the album, this combination might be the best. This album is indeed different than a lot of Metal out there. First, the band embraces several different styles...including Core, MeloDeath, Electronic, and some atmospheric qualities. Second, they play with a genuineness and a confidence not heard very often. Third and finally, and perhaps most fittingly, they play with a "fuck you" attitude to anyone out there. Take their music or leave it...I will gladly take it.
