ATHON (2014) was born in Varese, Italy in 2014 when Ame and Caste, both of them guitarists-vocalists met drummer Giona. Their common passion for heavy music, such as sludge, stoner, and doom brought them to cover many songs from MASTODON, BLACK TUSK, BARONESS, RED FANG and SLEEP as a start. In 2017 the project was completed when Manu on bass and vocals joined the band. After some live experience together they decide to focus on composing their own music by combining their individual ideas and influences in order to give birth to a personal sound, the one that represents them best on their cracking new release "Athon".
'Kaleidogscope' stands in the rain of a long lost post-Zeppelin vibe before putting the needle into a decidedly more of a sludge groove. Dig it - 'KaleiDOGscope' - these dudes are pals of the pooch. Promo fotos show the band squaring off for the camera while Bow-Wow-Wow looks on, perhaps waiting for the next gig - who knows? There is a cinematic quality to this music, advancing a grand vision on a reel usually reserved for theme albums and progressive rock. Italians are not afraid of doing something with singular vision and style and 'Kaleidogscope' bears this out, opening on plucked strings and exiting on a space echo freakout featuring that same lost Zeppelin vibe thanks to Giona on drums - this cat can throw down. Listen to Giona on 2nd cut 'Dakhma'. It takes a minute to register that the John Bonham pulsations in the room are coming from his right foot. Wow, I wanna jam with this guy.
'Reverse Satyr' sets off with a groaning off-kilter about-face guitar riff, chewy as an autumn string bean and flashing overdriven Hindi fyre. Ame and Cast share vocal duties and one of these lads has the siren delivery of Mike Scheidt, metal god of YOB. Dench Pagey guitar riffing goin' down on this tune ... nothing bluesy unless your ears can suss out the cozmik blues thang. I dig this whole release but this particular song I Doth Proclaim Lo Spettacolare. 'The End' isn't the stoned immaculate Oedipal The End as the DOORS did the bits and pieces death dance by ... more a grunge mortal vision wrapped in minor death key riffs and vocals that squat on a groove rawk-metal style.
Final standout cut 'Absinthe' is metal - woozy intoxicating metal, staggering like Frankenstein's monster on metalcore guitar riffs, 'core vocals and shot thru with lightning rock-metal production. This music would not be out of place circa 1988 when Ye Olde Heavy Metal threw off the oppressive chains of same-old riffs, same-old vocals and welcomed bands like CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SLAYER and METALLICA into the revival tent. Featuring songs of over 5 minutes and topping out at 7 and a half minutes, ATHON brings a celluloid liquid music show of a metalcore DREAM THEATER without the usual British gears and weedly-dee guitar. Brothers and Sisters, these songs turn every corner at least once and head down alleys unforeseen. Pucker ¡!
