As Skies Divide - Throne of Sanity album cover

"Thrones of Sanity" is the debut EP by Progressive Metal group AS SKIES DIVIDE, released through label Violent Groove. The record has a fairly interesting lyrical concept about a person battling with his inner thought demons and though coming out of the battle victorious, he's still confused about the state of reality, wandering while wondering about what's real and what's not. I think it's a fascinating idea, but was the music written and performed as well? Find out next, on Dragon Ball Z. I'm gonna go track-by-track, since it's just 5 tracks, at 26 minutes.

"Hollow Messages" is an excellent opener in short, but it's an even better song. Save for a few parts, it's mostly lead by a few repeating clean notes which alone give the song an atmosphere that I can't seem to understand honestly. I think it's mostly because of the sound design and production, but even though "Hollow Messages" has good songwriting, those 6-7 notes steal the show, no question. "Death Toll" has an awesomely obnoxious intro, I mean what the hell are those vocals? In all seriousness, I find the vocals of Victor Goch to be the weakest aspect of the effort, but it kind of works well with the epic chaos that track no. 2 operates with for most of its duration.

"My Time is Done"'s time is done basically after the first second. It has many parts, but most of them (besides the hook-ish section) aren't executed well, especially the more melodic stuff. But at least the vocals are tolerable sometimes. "Weeping Plains" starts out melodic/clean and djenty as well, and from a production standpoint, it's pretty impressive int he second half, I don't know how to describe it, but listen to the whole thing and you'll understand. Besides that however, it's very forgettable.

"When Memories Replay", the closer is the song that I listened to 1 or 2 weeks ago, and while I wasn't blown away by it, I thought it was a decent song. Revisiting it, I can say, the vocals aren't as bad as usual, the harshes are okay. It's definitely the most interesting song with it's almost 7 and a half minute length and varied parts. I'd say this is somewhere between the boring third and fourth, and the great first and second tracks.
Verdict: The definition of mixed.
