Arkaeon - Parasit album cover

From Bandcamp, "ARKÆON is a Black Metal power-trio consisting of three enigmatic, maverick veterans of Danish extreme underground music. Humanity is parasitical to life, as life is parasitical to humanity, ARKÆON says. The rotten Danish lyrics of "Parasit" clarify the band's concept, spewing hateful damnation and accursing the absurdity and vulgarism inherent to the parasitic relationship of modern humanity with the autochthonous forces of organic life." The album contains five songs.

"Skagerrak" is the first. The music is very dark. There is a loose structure here in and out of several meter changes as well as changes in sound, in general. It's a bit hard to follow through an entire song. The bassist might the best part about the music. "Smertens Vilje" begins with a swifter pace but many of the traditional Black Metal elements are still very much present...the vocals, the galloping drums, and the ever-present guitars. "Parasit" again presents a few meter shifts but they are very subtle, and the vocals, guitars, and drums take over much of the sound. There are some experimental elements, but they are overshadowed by the fierce nature of the music.

"Forbrænde" features a chaotic and dissonant sound for the most part. Again, the band are fairy adept at keeping up with several changes in pacing but I find much of the song to be bland in terms of the presentation. The chaos gets worse as the song goes on, and much of the meaning is also thrown by the wayside. "Evig Trods" closes the album, at ten minutes in length. It another chaotic offering consisting mostly of harrowing, aggressive sounds, almost like the whole world is burning around you. Dissonance is the name of the game here. The sound drops a bit after the half-way mark, to eerie tones before regrouping shortly thereafter.

Overall, perhaps due to the label they are signed to, I was expecting them to be totally odd and off the wall. But what I got was a fairly standard Black Metal album without much in the way of experimentation. The songs were just OK, and the album was pretty representative of the genre, although their musicianship was few shades better than the average. I was disappointed.
