Arcturon - Expect Us album cover

The Basel based melodic death metal quartet was established 10 years ago and has released by now a demo and a full album, which were received quite well in the European scene, and now they have recorded this EP with help of Johan Örnborg  (ARCH ENEMY, SOILWORK, AMON AMARTH, etc.) at Fascinationstreet Studios in Sweden, and landed on my desktop, and honestly, I don't really know what to say.

"My Treasure" sounds as if it's a modern version of the classic genre of melodic death metal, which is the line throughout the EP. Great work on the melodies, great sound, crystal clear, the influence of their previous producer, and the band SCAR SYMMETRY are audible throughout the whole EP. It has its Metalcore touches, and also its traditional Melodeath touches, interesting piece.

"Expect Us" the title track follows the same path, what I call New Wave Of Melodic Death Metal, very melodic riff, keyboards in the background, on the other hand some groove riffs, sounding very SCAR SYMMETRY, with the keyboards and the melodic vocals.

"A Restless Soul" starts with a melodic, clean guitar intro, filled with keyboards in the background and clean vocals exchanged with growls after one sentence, very SCAR SYMMETRY as well, about mid song they do something that actually has reminded me of a song by AVENGED SEVENFOLD actually, and then they return to SCAR SYMMETRY, and do it pretty well. All in all a good song.

"Rowan" that closes the EP starts like the previous song, with keyboards, with what sounds like MIDI strings section, and not too good samples, but as soon as the bass and vocals kick in, the song becomes way better. The guitars here as in the rest of the album are pure quality, very melodic, pretty technical, if there is a downside in this song it's 2 things, the strings sections which sounds pretty bad, and the female-read line, that sounds as if it was made with Google's speech engine, which works bad. The song could have worked a lot better without it.

All in all a good album with a couple bad sides, at first I couldn't put my finger on what they are, but I found out what they are, Google speech engine, MIDI strings, and the lacking length of the album. If they fix it in their next release, might strongly compete for Melodic Death Metal album of the year.
