Granular Transformation
Apparition
APPARITION is a Death/Doom Metal band formed in the USA. "Granular Transformation" is their second EP, and contains five songs. "Soul Secretion" is the first song. Out of the gates, the music sounds much closer to Death Metal than anything else. The guttural vocals, the lack of melody, and the trademark riffing of the genre are present. There are some Doomy elements here and there, but this is Death Metal to me. "Fluid Memories" is more of the same. There are pig squeals, and thrashy riffs, combined with the vocals this makes three of the early elements of Death Metal.
"Ritual of Larva Rebirth" is another slow and heavy offering with much the same sound as the previous songs. The Doomy elements are nice but not enough to save the EP from falling into obscurity. "Torrid Meteor Fog" is a shorter song with a little more energy but the production is what keeps the songs grey. It is muted, and doesn't allow the music to fully shine. I am sure this is by design, but it is not helping the album much. "Doorway to the Astral" closes the album. Five songs that sound nearly exactly the same is not an exciting EP to listen to. The band has to find a way to expand their sound a bit, to take some chances, and interject their own personality into the music. This is one area where Americans don't do as well as their European or Nordic counterparts. As is stands, this EP just fell flat.
