ANTIGONE'S FATE was founded in 2015 as a side-project by multi-instrumentalist Ruun, when the newly written songs - all of which created during a difficult phase of Ruun's life - turned out to be too out-of-character for his other bands. Thus, while initially being created only for himself, a lot of the ANTIGONE'S FATE material withered away on his hard disc without Ruun considering an actual album release. When, in 2017, he began writing new songs for one of his earlier bands, it turned out that during this previous stage of personal development he had actually moved too far away from the band in terms of subject matter and style. The logical consequence of this process was to reactivate ANTIGONE'S FATE - and not just in order to release the already written material, but as a long-term outlet for his creativity. While the debut album "Insomnia" was merely an introduction to this fated journey, the real voyage stretches over several chapters, and "Zum Horizont..." is where the anguishing journey gains momentum. The album contains four tracks.

"Abendstern" leads off the album, at over thirteen minutes in length, opening with soft and solemn acoustical guitars. The main riff comes in clearly with an alluring charm. The clean vocals also have a gritty edge to them. The harsh vocals turn guttural as a new sound is ushered in. Runn sure has a repertoire of various vocal approaches here. Anguished screams cut with pretty guitar elements take the track to completion. "Morgengrauen" is only about nine minutes in length. It has a slower pace and mixed vocal approaches again. One thing remains constant...the melancholy and somber melody. It makes you ache. At one point the vocals become whispers, coupled with clean guitars. The ambient passage towards the end is beautiful.

"Herbstnacht" is about nine minutes long as well. The song is absolutely pretty, though in a depressing way. Runn varies his vocal approach again, sometimes with clean harmonies and other times with raspy growls. The guitars take center stage here, creating that wonderful landscape of funereal and somber sounds, coupled with absolute positive sounds at other times. "Der graue Block" closes the album, and it's a monster...at over twenty-one minutes in length. Clean and somber guitars provide the opening sequence. You feel at peace. The main riff comes in and it's a steady drone from there, until the harsh vocals come in, at which point the guitars build in layers. Just after the halfway mark, the sound drops to near standstill, with echoing acoustical guitars. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful, and Runn sure knows how to dial this up. The ending sequence is monumental, with big riffs and background vocals.

Overall, this is a unique Black Metal album created by an obviously experiences musician, who knows how to add layers to his music that keep it both solemn and charming at the same time. It's anguished screams, and pretty melodies. Yin and yang. That balance that tips one way and is restored the other way eventually. Runn created four wonderful tracks here that you will find much depth and character in, and will discover more each time you listen to it.
