Interpretations of the Unknown Wilderness

Antagonyze

A very good Old School Death/Thrash Metal release.
June 21, 2024

The Chilean Metal scene is permeated by a clear Old School insight. Of course such thing is a Damocles’ sword, because things can be excellent or a big loss of time, what has a dependency of how a band works: it can create something on such old and known formats, or it will just rely on the clichés? This question is worth of answers given by music, and the quartet ANTAGONYZE shows on “Interpretations of the Unknown Wilderness” that they have to mature a bit more, but their path is right. Felipe Cadenas (recording, and did some backing vocals) and Ignacio Riveros (mixing, mastering) are the ones who worked on the construction of the album’s sonority. There are traces of an Old School outfit in some moments (as in the instrumental tunes used, just pay attention to the guitars’ sound), but relying on something modern and full of aggressiveness, but defined and understandable.

The band works on an Old School Death/Thrash Metal trench using some elements from the turn of the 80s to the 90s (the model defined by acts as DEATH, POSSESSED, MASTER, MASSACRE and other pioneers), without overloading the technical aspect (it has a good technical insight, but on a traditional Death Metal way). It’s brutal and aggressive, full of energy, and it can erode bones and necks without problems. The band’s musical efforts need some maturing, but on the album’s songs, their potential becomes clear on moments as “Inferior Entity” (pay attention to the extreme hooks of the rhythms, with a massive work on bass guitar and drums), “Inside Journey” (the slow rhythms boost the aggressive side of their music, making the grunts of the vocals more expressive), “Paradoxical Panic Essence” (a brutal and massive attack of the guitars with a hooking energy), “Hidden Wisdom” (such hooks are great to be heard), “Shiny Dark Star” and “Segregado”.

ANTAGONYZE is another very good name from the Chilean scene, and “Interpretations of the Unknown Wilderness” can cause the eruptions of all volcanos in the region.
