Unveiling The Origin
Anguish Sublime
ANGUISH SUBLIME is an Atmospheric Death Metal band from Serbia, formed in 1998. They released a Demo in 2004, and then suffered some line-up changes. Ten years later, the present this new EP entitled "Unveiling the Origin" which contains five tracks. "Damnation Code" is the opening song...a short track just under three minutes. It does however grad your attention rather quickly. There is a marching quality to the main riff and rhythm, and an overall darkness that covers you slowly, like thunderheads overtaking the sky with a tornado imminent. The vocals are mostly spoken, in monotone fashion, exuding a cold sterility. Occasionally there are screams of anguish. Broken voices and reverberating, haunting piano notes close out the song. "Worm's Eye View" is considerably longer. The main riff is clearly influenced by NWOBHM bands with its melodious presence, and we now hear the traditional Death Metal vocals in the verses. Once again they are able to make a lasting impression on the listener with the structure of the various sounds. "Coffin For A Frozen Desire" has a short keyboard fade in before the swift main riff comes at you. This track has a lot of energy to go with its brutality.
I especially enjoy the vocal approaches used here and the twin guitar harmonies. The bass led interlude is also very nicely done. "Cycloneheart Vertigo" is the longest song on the album, coming in at over seven minutes. The inner workings of melody and brutality, or anger and temperance, remain in high effect. I also enjoy the haunting effect of the brief guitar solo done with plenty of reverb. "Episode Andromeda" closes the EP. This track is all about mood setting, and atmosphere. A soft acoustic guitar riff combines with a spoken voice, echoing in the background. More layers are added in support of the main melody as the track progresses. Stylistically I would call this Melodic Death Metal more than anything else, but that is just my impression. Sometimes surprises come at you when you least expect them. For an independent EP in this genre, I have to say that I am impressed with their creativity, diversity of sound and use of outside instrumentation. There is also a confidence in their songwriting that shows in their commitment to the creation of their own sound.<
