Consisting of Houston rock scene veterans, Texas based band AMERICAN FANGS bring a wealth of experience to their debut album.
Right from the get go you immediately experience something fresh, yet simultaneously familiar, as the first line of "Riot Food" resonates, 'Got your attention, gimme some attention'. With my complete attention firmly in their grasp I enjoy the introductory track with a swirling mix of melodic flavours warming the musical palate for treats to follow.
Punk rock purists may hate my subsequent reference, however it is offered genuine humble respect and reverence. I hear a RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS like verse followed by the fun and frivolity of RAMONES like toe tapping head nodding notes.
The aural hooks are firmly imbedded as I helplessly venture forth to track two "Le Kick" and am met this time with a fast, flawless rock song of the modern era destined surely to be picked up by a soundtrack sooner rather than later. A laundered version for radio will have heads nodding in a light to moderate mosh on a worldwide scale.
Devotees will certainly be familiar with track three, namely "Pomona" which literally grabs your collar and shakes you in rhythmic sway, relentlessly until we are all collectively thrown clear, much to the bands amusement according to the background studio inclusion. Fuck it! That track is stuck in my head for days now.
Utterly fantastic guitar work are the staple throughout the album. When hard rock fans like myself feel themselves getting lost or losing interest Kenyon Puntenney and Chris Goodwin drag you back into the track and leave you powerless to exit.
The vocal strength and diversity of the bands lead vocalist is most enjoyable indeed. Gabe Cavazos is talented indeed and leaves you considering the astute lyrics long after the tracks have ended. His skills ranging from melancholic reminiscing to gritty grungy growling, this man has got the lot. Joined by the percussively powerful Micah Miller on drums and schmick Kyle Shimek on bass and vocals, this band are destined for rock greatness.
In fact the entire album keeps delivering uncompromisingly with each track. "River You Bought" is a typically excellent track with light sprinklings of mid might CHEAP TRICK. This band is an absolute must for rock fans everywhere. A little alternative certainly, but with one track, you're hooked. You can't go back from here. And why the hell not? With another installment from this quintessential quintet of talent just around the corner, you won't have long to wait for more.
Next up, "Dirty Legs". Bring it on lads, and please, please, please an Australian tour with locals THIRSTY MERC in support.
