Metal maniacs, rejoice! I'm proud to present to you: AGATUS; signed via Hells Headbangers Records, hailing from Greek soil - performing Black Metal/Heavy Metal, on their 3rd album entitled "The Eternalist". (released on October 9th, 2016)
Since formation in 1992; the quintet in question have 2 albums behind them, I'm introduced to their 3rd record "The Eternalist". Combining Black Metal with Heavy Metal is an unprecedented fusion; going in with medium expectations, I find myself enjoying a joint mix of atmospheric Black Metal alongside an instrumental Heavy Metal crusher. This unparalleled experimentation here is uncanny; 10 distinctive songs ranging at around 42:45, showcases complex songwriting that makes for a memorable and original composition. The titular track "The Eternalist" delivers a organic aesthetic to a challenging substance in fruition, thinking outside of the box is a hard achievement in the process of creating a merged yet broad range of indifferent musical sub-genres into one neat package. The Dark produces all major instruments with the exception for the drums that Vorskaath owns, all sounds solid and stellar for the most part...
As the album progresses - "The Invisible (Fifth Portal To Atlantis)" implements seamlessly integrated harmonies that mimics guitar riffs from bands like JUDAS PRIEST/IRON MAIDEN that radiated from their prime. "The Oath (Of Magic And Fire)" formulates an adept Black Metal atmosphere, consistently barraging into a fierce mood while hammering at Heavy Metal intrigues...inspirational to the co-founder's (The Dark) influences. "Gods Of Fire" stimulates with dexterous flair in guitar work and an efficient sound production and excels with sufficient enlightenment to a fulfilling musical journey. The vocals steadily improve and doesn't take much getting used to where originally - they sounded very guttural as if I was mistaking this for a Death Metal record, while this is still welcome...it still deceives one as a not so raw production with this incentive.
"Dreamer", "Perils Of The Sea (Part II)" & "At Dusk I Was Born" ascend the aforementioned with catchy as hell melodies, blazing through forcefully with captivating lead guitar components where the vocalisation continues to grow more raspy and entertaining. "Flight Into Forever", "Gilgamesh" & "To Last" conclude this exquisite piece of work - compelling me to say that this was an elegantly constructed piece of art.
If you love a mix of sub-genres that actually sound decent in one package - this is one to check out.<
