Despite the distance that separates the two elements that form ÆVANGELIST (it will take more than one day to drive from Oregon to Illinois), the duo comprised by multi-instrumentalist Matron Thorn (BENIGHTED IN SODOM, BETHLEHEM) and vocalist Ascaris (SHAVANASA, ex-VELNIAS) is pretty restless when it comes to craft new songs and already released one EP, one split and a new full-length album following this debut full-length originally issued in 2012 by I, Voidhanger Records.

Now reissued by Blood Harvest, "De Masticatione Mortuorum In Tumulis" is an unsettling and creepy effort, merging some brutal and discordant riffs with a malevolent and eerie atmosphere that recalls at times the dark, murky and terrifying tones of Portal. Lead track "Anno Mortii: Gnostic Transcendental Heresy" does sound a bit like Portal, starting with a genuinely disturbing instrumental intro whose source could very well be the depths of hell or the terrifying world of H.P. Lovecraft, then bursting into a massive wall of distorted, murky riffs rounded with some devilish and brutal gutturals. The overall atmosphere is just as unsettling as it is unpleasantly captivating.

"Pendulum" follows in with a more streamlined, but equally disturbing approach delivering some straight-up and crushing riffage and diabolical, horror-inspired roars. Other tunes, such as "Death Illumination", "Funeral Monolith" and "The Longevity of Second Death" see ÆVANGELIST retuning to the unorthodox formula explored on the leading track, combining discordant, weird riffs and unconventional drum patterns with some chilling and creepy ambiences and inhuman growls to recreate a truly demonic and bizarre atmosphere that could easily soundtrack an adaption of a H.P. Lovecraft horror tale to the big screen.

Overall, "De Masticatione Mortuorum In Tumulis" is a very worthy release for those wanting a genuinely creepy Death Metal album.
