AEOLITH is an Experimental Black Metal band formed in Greece in 2016. As a one-man band, it was Thanos's vision of the unknown parts of history which led to the creation of this debut album. Thanos is a self-taught guitarist and pianist and has worked as a session musician for many Greek Metal bands as well as a full time member of a band yet to debut. "Remnants of a Future Past" contains eight tracks, with a total running time of twenty-seven minutes.

"Sign of Existence" is an ambient one-minute opening instrumental, with just enough of a presence to call a song. It's more of a mood setter for what is to come. "Cosmic Mold" opens with lush keyboard textures, slowly gathering steam from sounds that seem to come from bright distant galaxies in space. A furious Black Metal sound ensues but those textures remain, creating a harrowing landscape of dark and melancholic melodies that chill your soul to the core. "Symbols of an Alien Sky" opens with what sounds like the aftermath of an explosion. It's a fast moving song that uses delicate piano notes to support the melody line. The vocals are vehement and frightening. A beautiful piano interlude is also present but creepy tones in the background remind you that you can't have the light without the darkness.

Next we have the two-part title track. First is "Remnants of a Future Past I." It is pretty chaotic from the start. A three-note chord pattern is simple but very effective in conveying the filth of the underbelly of the world as we know it. Part II is about the same length and hears that chord progression continue in the beginning before tying in a different riff. About half-way through the sound drops off in favor of enhanced scary piano notes, before returning to the intensity established at the beginning. "Sun Prelude 17" is a short three-minute song of piano and atmospheric bliss. What Thanos really manages to do well is the balance he creates between the beauty and light from the piano notes and the snarl and darkness of what is going on in the background.

"The Tone of Perseus" is a deep abyss of aggressive and heavy sounds that are fearsome in their delivery. "Saturn Rings" is the closing track and the longest on the album. The opening notes sound like something you might hear emitting from the planet's mysterious particles of water ice and rock that circle around it. Once again the lovely piano notes are the symmetry that connect the harrowing gloom to the world of the living. I love the experimental sounds in this song also. They remind you that you can create feelings and emotional character without having to do so with traditional instrumentation.

The only fault I can find in this album is the length. I really wanted to hear more of what he has to offer, and I think you will too. His personal take on the genre is very original, melding traditional elements of Black Metal of old with the ambient and experimental touches he uses throughout. Being a pianist, you can also hear the mark that they make, bringing beauty and light to a genre that is all about the shadows and screams of the Underworld.
