Abhomine - Proselyte Parasite Plague album cover

On February 28, 2020, ABHOMINE will release "Proselyte Parasite Plague" via Osmose Productions and Hells Headbangers. ABHOMINE is Pete Helmkamp's solo project. You may know Helmkamp from ANGELCORPSE, ORDER FROM CHAOS, and REVENGE. Cazz Grant is no small fry either; his bands are CRUCIFIER and GRAND BELIAL'S KEY. This album comes after ABHOMINE's debut album, "Larvae Offal Swine," that was released in 2016.

Considering Helmkamp and Grant's body of work, is it any surprise that ABHOMINE is a black/death metal band? ABHOMINE's style of blackened death is aggressive and hateful. Don't look for melody or a break. Luckily, you won't need one as this album is only 23 minutes long. The riffs and drumming are at breakneck speed throughout. The overall sound is murky and heavy on the low-end. A highlight of this album is the dual vocals. The layered growls create this image of hellish beasts snarling all around you. At certain points, Grant will add a wordless growl to great effect. Even when only Helmkamp is growling, you can still feel the intensity and hostility.

The opening track is "Heresy Pulpit." There isn't a nice atmospheric or melodic instrumental kicking off the album, just rough growls. Chaotic guitar riffs and frantic drumming kick in soon after. The next track is "Infidel and Unclean." The low-end coming from the guitar and the bass is menacing and the track is kept at a fast pace with blast beats. The third track is "Gogamgoz." Again, the low-end is awesome here. It is another fast track, but contrasted well with more drawn out growls. The sonic onslaught continues, as both "Blacklist" and "Saracen" are also quite intense and fast. "Progeny Devoid" is the closing track. No breaks are given, even at the end. This is yet another fast paced song. It closes just like it began, with bestial voices snarling, leaving the listening in a state of uneasy silence afterward.

All in all, I recommend this album for fans of extreme black/death metal or grindcore. If you like REVENGE and BLASPHEMY, or participating in those kinds of activities, then you might like ABHOMINE. The purpose of this music isn't to be progressive or creative. This music is a vehicle for the band to express their contempt and disgust. If you're a fan of cacophonous and savage music, give this album a listen.
