A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH is a Gothic doom metal band based in New York.  "Infernum In Terra" is their fourth full length album since forming in 2010. In 2019, they released a covers EP "Infernum in Terra" is a serviceable album for doom fans but it falls short of greatness.  Although I enjoyed my time with it, it never blew me away.  This is definitely a "what you hear is what you get" type of album. You aren't going to find different aspects or uncover new layers upon each listen.  However, the biggest issue I have with it would be the flow of the album.

Of the eleven tracks, three of them are instrumentals that bring absolutely nothing of value to the album.  Unfortunately, they do bring the album to a dead stop. The album begins with one of these tracks, titled "Infernum" and it is just wind, drums and chattering thrown together. The following track "Believe In Nothing (You Are Lost)" is one of the best songs on the album and would have made a much better opener. The song's main riff is a short, crunchy set of notes that lays down a heavy tone of doom and sets the mood for the rest of the album. Sal's clean vocals have a laid back, stoner feel to them with a bit of a Gothic feel to round out the edges. It does seem like the music on the album takes a back seat to his vocals at times though as their isn't much happening in most of the songs.

"Shards of Glass" takes a melodic approach with the riffs, which are well balanced and catchy. During the lyrical stanzas, the song loses my interest because, well, nothing all that interesting is happening musically. The heavier parts pick up the song and elevates, which is something that can be applied to the album as a whole. "Lucifer's Sun" is one of the better songs, due to the slow riffs that grind into the fabric of the song. The drummer is atmospheric enough to hold down the Gothic tone during the more spacious parts.  The moody guitar solo at the end caps off the song nicely.

The final track proper track, "Reflections of the Dead" has an ominous beginning coupled with a well done slow groove. This particular song has better pacing and slow than the album as a whole so its good they saved the best for last...or should have.  The actual last song, "Souls In The Abyss," is another boring, filler, instrumental. I wanted Gothic doom and that is what I received with "Infernum in Terra." It is a solid album even if it lacks interesting moments and depth in places.
