9 DEAD just presented to us their self titled debut on November 4th. In partnership with Comatose Music, Brutal Death Metal is the goal of this Deathcore band from New Jersey. They recently went viral on Tik Tok with over 1,000,000 views on their latest single. That's not too bad for a band that was just formed last year. Hopefully it has more meat to go with the single appetizer. With self described sounds from the depths of nightmares and songs sculpted in horror, they say Blake Kinnamon's deranged voice roars, howls and screams, we will soon see what that is all about. Their assault of our senses will not waiver.
"Abysmal Stupor" starts over the crackling of fire and screams of terror, which quickly lead to something much worse, his visceral vocals ripping us apart. Once again, I have run across something a little different and I must say that it is legitimately freaky sounding, vocally. A unique approach without a doubt. "Tortured", is appropriate. It sounds like someone could be while we are listening to this one. Everything is musically sound through the first three and definitely disturbing. Mission accomplished so far, solidly. "Realms", isn't much more of a happy tune either. It is a continuation of more of the same. Fast, chaotic drums accompanied with solid, heavy riffs thrown in the middle to hold it together. This band would make one hell of a pit. What is element 15, is the question here. This is where things change and get even heavier. You will just have to listen to understand what I am talking about.
The seventh song is a bit of a surprise, starting out more like Randy Rhoads's, "Dee" out-takes, followed up with a "normal" solo, on an instrumental piece, on this not so normal album. Not sure how this came about or how it fits in but it drastically changes the direction 180 degrees from where we were going. There is nothing wrong with it but it hardly fits the motif. I'm expecting them to sound like they are ripping the heads off of babies again, any second now. "Desecrate", doesn't disappoint. More of what you would expect finally wraps things up. All in all, brutal is the first word that comes to mind to describe this body of work. Pure brutality, in the form of music.
