0N0 is an Industrial Doom/Death Metal band from Bratislava; "Cloaked Climax Concealed," is their fourth EP in addition to two full lengths. Despite being just two songs, this very short EP has me wanting to hear the band's next full length—and to go back and listen to their other albums considering this is the first I've heard of their music. The name of the band members are about as unique as the amalgamation of Metal, Death Metal, Doom, and Industrial found on these two tracks.
Despite my love for all things Doom, I'm not real familiar with bands that add in the industrial element. I suppose it should be no surprise this sounds so good because the cold, distant sounds of industrial work perfectly together with the bleakness of Death/Doom. For just three members, the songs sound extremely full and well rounded, with a lot of different sounds and layers to them. The vocals are deep, deep Death growls and sound at home with the slow, grinding guitar riffs. A drummer wasn't listed so I'm not sure if he/she is unnamed or if the drums are programmed in. Either way, the double bass is thick, an atmosphere of pure destruction and really boosts the songs an offsets a lot of the more industrial tones.
The first track, "The Crown Unknown," begins with a strong fade in, a mix of cascading drums and guitar that settles into a groove of faint clean vocals, Death growls, and a swirling mass of industrial sounds that actually add to their sound rather than becoming a distraction. A band like this doesn't really have conventional song structures or anything like solos, bridges, or breakdowns but instead focuses on a creating an overall movement. I actually enjoy stuff like this and it is refreshing to see bands like this do something outside the box.
The second track, "Hidden in the Trees," and it is quite a bit more abrasive compared to the first track. The guitars have a bit more bite and there is a slight hint of melody in the notes. The drums and Death vocals are particularity aggressive. As always with such short EP's, this is hard to put a rating on. Good or bad songs, it is hard to judge a band's merit on just two songs but, at the same time, these two did hook me in fairly quickly and definitely have me anticipating their next one.
