I had seen all the bands before, but I saw DETHKLOK under unfavorable conditions so I was particularly excited to see what kind of theatrics were going to be on display. Upon my arrival I couldn't believe how many people there were in line! Once again, a great turn out for a Metal concert in Kansas, which seems to be more of a common occurrence recently. After talking with some people in line I realized that it had been sold out for 2 weeks!!
SOILENT GREEN was the first act up; I had seen them several times before and at least somewhat enjoyed them but this was not the case. My musical taste has matured somewhat since the last time and they just didn't do it for me anymore. All the songs sounded the same and while they put on a decent show as far as entertainment value, I just couldn't help but want to listen to GOATWHORE which also features Ben Falgoust on the vocals.
CHIMAIRA was the surprise of the evening but I will get to that later though. I knew CHIMAIRA was going to slay, since I had seen them probably 3 or 4 times before tonight and they have never disappointed, in the least. They had their standard stage show with the strobe lights, smoke, and lasers, which for me never gets old and is always entertaining. They played pretty much the same songs that always do from the last 3 albums with I believe one song from Pass Out Of Existence. My only gripe about their set is that they need to bring back Lazarus as the closer, such an epic track from Impossibility of Reason.
Finally, getting to see DETHKLOK in the appropriate environment was finally before me and rawk they did. They played their songs flawlessly and the cartoons were a riot. They essentially played everything in their catalogue totaling in about 50 minutes in total. I felt that they should have done some covers or something rather then only play for 50 minutes. The classics were all from the coffee jingle to every song from the episodes having to do with water (my personal faves).
Here is where the surprise (see above) comes in, CHIMAIRA WAS BETTER!! DETHKLOK while everything about their set was great their feet didn't move at all. I thought they depended too much on the cartoon and not enough on showmanship. I know when I go to a show I want to be entertained by people, if I wanted to watch DETHKLOK the tv show I would have stayed home. This is by no means a swipe at their talent level, but I just would like to see them move more.
I would like to thank Hunt Industries for hooking up the guest pass as well.
