Life can be weird sometimes. One night you're working at some club, the next day you're attending a Metal concert there, at that very same place. Well, I must confess I was really looking forward to seeing Biomechanical play live anyway since they've managed to impress me a lot with their new release, "Empires Of The World" (out now via Earache Records).
I was supposed to go with Michael from the magazine but something occurred to him last minute and unfortunately for me, I had to go there alone. But you can never be too sure about how good or bad it's gonna be whenever you're attending a concert without any additional company to chat and comment with and I must say that I didn't have a bad time, not at all…
God Fear None opened and Death Metal grooves filled the "underground" air of the Underworld Club straight away. The band was pretty tight - meaning there was good chemistry within the band - which was pretty obvious to me as they surely knew where they were standing.
Not my favorite cup of tea (though I listen to all sorts of Metal; it depends on the mood I'm in too). I really enjoyed the band's cover of Alice Cooper's "Bed Of Nails" which did kind of remind me of Children of Bodom's cover of the same song, only without the keyboards. They also performed songs off their debut album (out now via Sonic Age Records) entitled "Envy" which were more or less cool Death Metal tunes.
After God Fear None it was time for another Greek Metal act, this time a quite known local act, Sorrowful Winds. It must have been the 3rd or 4th time I was seeing them, the first time being something like 5 or 6 years ago. Their style? Pure Heavy Metal - rather classic I'd say. Not a bad band. I never figured out though why they remained so "underground" and never made it into any bigger "leagues". Among their tunes, they also performed two covers songs, Riot's "Metal Soldiers" and Pantera's "Cemetery Gates" (they really got me with that one - I didn't expect a Pantera cover by them…).
And finally it was time for what I and most people at the Underworld Club had been waiting for, Biomechanical. With songs from both their two albums, "Eight Moons" (2003) & "Empires Of The World" (2005), the band started driving all of us who were there into a headbanging frenzy.
If you weren't headbanging from the very first track, then by the third or fourth, tops, you'd be swinging that neck of yours round and round until it fell off. Their sound was (is) massive! This band's definitely made for huge venues and surely deserves top-notch sound engineers wherever they play. But hey, what the hell, it was their debut live performance in Greece, so it didn't really matter. It matters now that I've seen them and I desperately want to see them again live but at some huge stage with some huge speakers and stuff. Their Pantera-meets-Nevermore-meets-Judas Priest kind of vibe enhanced with their own awesome technical skills is what blows me away always, what blew me away during that live performance! By the time they were done shredding us to pieces - which was right after they bolted us to the wall with a cover of Slayer's "Raining Blood" - Jamie and Chris on guitars, Jon and Matt on bass & drums respectively and of course the superb voice from hell, John K.… the message had been delivered. Biomechanical are what a fellow metalhead told me, "future Metal", and they're bound for huge success if they keep it up, keep concentrated and never loosen up. Because it's a tough Metal world out there…

Ending this report, I'd just like to mention it was a pity not many metalheads showed up for this show. I sometimes wonder how the hell some really shitty concerts manage to attract more people than some killer gigs like this one. Oh yeah, I forgot, I live in Greece where anything's possible….
Special Kudos: John K. for being such a kick-ass Greek Heavy Metal singer, Matt C. for being so cool overall and anyone who attended the show that night…
