BIG DADDY

The Holy Saturday in the city of Rio de Janeiro was the date for the first show of the Swedish quartet CRUCIFIED BARBARA on these lands, the third show from their first Brazilian tour, and as an excellent bonus, the Brazilian quintet HIBRIA, from Rio Grande do Sul (another state from Brazil) was going to do the opening act for the night. A third band was announced to play on tour, the Brazilian group KIARA ROCKS, but they didn't do the show. Don't know what happened, but things are this way sometimes.

A good public was on Teatro Odisséia for the shows (obvious could be better, but Ol' Big Daddy here personally think that the Holy Week was the main reason, for some prefer to be on the beach from another cities to stay on Rio de Janeiro. Don't ask me why, but things are this way here...), and the first one to enter the stage was the famous quintet HIBRIA. And my dear nephews and nieces, they really were incredible!

With good sound quality (a bit higher than the expected), they really show the reason for having a great respect on Japanese lands to the point of going to the top of selling scores there, for they' re perfect on stage.

Iuri Sanson shows himself as a great frontman, knowing how to set the public on fire, and he sings perfectly as on the CDS (and his communication with the public is excellent), and the same can be said for Abel Camargo and Renato Osório (both band guitarists), and both of them move freely on the stage and play very well, while Benhur Lima (bassist) and Eduardo Baldo (drummer) take care of rhythmic mass, so their show is something astonishing for us all.

They played a lot of excellent songs, as "Silent Revenge", "Shoot Me Down", with Yuri making people clap their hands and sing along with him, showing that HIBRIA finally is respected on their country, received as heroes by people on the venue, who came to ecstasy when they played "Silence Will Make You Suffer", "Defying the Rules" (that was played only in Rio 'till this show from the tour), and "Tiger Punch" (their greatest hit until the moment). And as it wasn't enough, they unleashed a explosive version for the legendary hymn "Rock'n'Roll", from LED ZEPPELIN.

Again: they got respect they deserve, so when the name HIBRIA is spoken, hear the CD and go to a show of the band. Then you'll be able to speak.

Setlist:
1. Silent Revenge
2. Lonely Fight
3. Shoot Me Down
4. Welcome to the Horror Show
5. Steel Lord on Wheels
6. The Anger Inside
7. Blinded by Faith
8. Silence Will Make You Suffer
9. Defying the Rules
10. Tiger Punch
11. Rock'n'Roll

And after a little time (just for HIBRIA to leave and to the sound technicians got the stage ready), and then the girls from CRUCIFIED BARBARA entered the stage for the first time in Rio de Janeiro lands.

These girls are really great, making a heavy sound with classic Hard Rock influences, having in Mia Coldheart a good frontwoman (she knows who to speak with the public, and is very charismatic), as Klara Force plays her guitar and makes the backing vocals with no problems, and Ida Evileye (bass) and Nicki Wicked (Drums) are firm on rhythmic kitchen (please, girls, it's not a sexist joke). But they looked a bit tired, but the fans didn't care for that, enjoying their time.

They played some great songs, as "Shut Your Mouth", "To Kill a Man", "Jennyfer", with the public singing a long, and the greatest moment was when they played "Into the Fire", the last song, but having lots of energy and seeing the happiness in their eyes for making a good show.

Setlist:

2. Shut Your Mouth
3. Sex Action
4. To Kill a Man
5. Everything We Need
6. Jennyfer
7. Sell My Kids for Rock'n'Roll

9. In Distortion We Trust
10. My Love is Black
11. Rock Me Like the Devil
12. Into the Fire

DANIEL SILVA

Almost two years after coming to Porto Alegre the Swedish Rockers from CRUCIFIED BARBARA returned to give us another round of pure Rock 'n' Roll. The event was originally going to be held at the Bar Opinião but then it changed to the Teatro CIEE, one of the weirdest places I have gone for a rock concert but I will talk more about it later.

I left to the concert at around 17h but it took me two hours to get there as I hadn't accounted for the usual rush hour traffic combined with the traffic of people going away for the Easter holiday. When I arrived, I was expecting to see a huge line already formed, as it was on their previous show, but there probably were less than ten people there. I sat on the lobby and waited for about ten minutes and at around 19h10 I entered the venue... my first impression was: "Damn! Am I at the right place?" CIEE is a theater and looks nothing like a place for Rock concerts, for starters it had chairs!! I have never been to a concert in a venue like this... another thing that weirded me was how there was almost no one there, probably even less than 30, would this be it or more people would come?

Precisely at 20h the opening act GALGOS took to the stage and even with such a small audience they rocked the hell out, they had a lot energy and chemistry, they didn't even have a setlist and came up with it as they went along. They certainly impressed the hell out of me and I am definitely going to check their stuff out. GALGOS played for about 20 minutes and they ended by thanking the people that came early to see them play which was totally worth it.

Next on the bill came KIARA ROCKS, a band infamously known for playing alongside IRON MAIDEN and SLAYER on the Metal day on "Rock" in Rio V, even though many people felt they didn't fit in there. They were quite energetic as well and had a good charisma and knew how to interact with the public, even convinced them to get out of their chairs and come closer to the stage. I enjoyed the first few songs but halfway through the set I was bored out my mind and their show felt that was never going to end, but luckily it did. Their show began at 20h50 and ended at 21h50 and not to say that there wasn't a good point, they did covered MOTÖRHEAD's "Ace of Spades", although it is funny that the highest point of the show was not one of their own songs but a cover...

Anyway, at 22h15, now with around 100 people, the curtains opened to reveal the stage with a big CRUCIFIED BARBARA flag on the back and only Nicki Wicked on the drums who then introed the show with "The Crucifier" followed by the appearance of the rest of the band. The public went crazy and would remain as crazy from beginning to end. Between songs they would thank the public in Portuguese saying how great it was to play there and you could see by the way they interacted with the public that this wasn't simply the usual bullshit artists sometimes say but it was genuine.

On their setlist they played some songs from the last album, their song "In Distortion We Trust" from their first record, which Klara Force introduced by saying that next year it would complete ten years since the release of their debut album, and two new songs "To Kill A Man" and "Sell My Kids For Rock n' Roll" which were well received by the public. The show ended at 23h25 with their customary Monty Python song.

Setlist:
1. The Crucifier
2. Play Me Hard
3. Shut Your Mouth
4. Sex Action
5. To Kill a Man
6. Everything We Need
7. Jennyfer
8. Rules And Bones
9. Losing the Game
10. Sell My Kids for Rock'n'Roll
11. In Distortion We Trust
12. My Love is Black
13. Rock Me Like the Devil
14. Into the Fire

I sure would have loved to have seen the original opening act HIBRIA and could have gone without KIARA ROCKS but, all in all, it was a great night, even better than their first show here, they kicked ass, showing great charisma and seemed to be more comfortable with this audience than before.
