THE MOTH AND THE FLAME: Announce New Album Ruthless + Hear New Single "The New Great Depression"
October 10, 2018
THE MOTH AND THE FLAME are excited to announce the forthcoming release of their new album Ruthless, out February 1st via Thirty Tigers. Produced by Grammy award winner Peter Katis (INTERPOL, THE NATIONAL, MIDDLE KIDS) and Grammy nominated Producer Nate Pyfer (KASKADE), Ruthless follows the Los Angeles by way of Provo, UT band's 2016 release Young & Unafraid, of which NPR Music wrote that in "channeling a pop sound, the group shows its resilience" while maintaining "a wonderful moodiness to the music that always lands right in the sweet spot." Among other praise, The Guardian described their music as "rock that is dour yet dazzling! lush, layered, and often complex".
Today, the band share "The New Great Depression", debuted worldwide on Sirius Alt Nation. The new single from Ruthless marks THE MOTH AND THE FLAME's return from a year-long hiatus after lead singer Brandon Robbins donated his kidney to Corey Fox (an early booster of the band, and owner of the venue Velour in Provo, UT). With songwriting as his outlet during recovery, Robbins along with bandmates Mark Garbett and Andrew Tolman, hoped to shed the realities of anxiety and depression through their new album. "There are some really dark and uncomfortable moments contrasted with breakthroughs of clarity, beauty and hope," Robbins shares. "It's something we feel really strongly about, especially with how prevalent depression is today."

With the release of "The New Great Depression," THE MOTH AND THE FLAME are making a call for people to open up to friends and loved ones about their own battles with depression. In a letter to fans today posted on Facebook, Robbins relates his own experience of sharing his struggle with his parents for the first time.
"Opening up about it changed my life. It changed my perspective. It led me to find more help. It brought me to a healthier and happier place. I share this because 1 in 5 people will suffer from depression in their lifetime. Too many struggle alone and in silence. Talking to someone immediately improves your chances of getting better. I challenge anyone who is struggling with depression to tell someone, anyone. And then I challenge you to share that experience, whether past or present, and hashtag it, so others will be inspired to do the same. #OpenUp"
Since the release of their eponymous debut album, THE MOTH AND THE FLAME have found themselves on the road with the likes of WOLF ALICE, NEON TREES, and BIG DATA. They've been invited to perform at festivals including Riot Fest, Bumbershoot, Firefly, and Bottlerock among others, and their songs have been featured on 13 Reasons Why, Real World, NBA 2K17 and American Idol, while racking up over 22 million streams on Spotify so far.
