THE CRINN: Press praise for the band's new album 'Shadowbreather'
May 20, 2015
2014 marks a decade of existence for Minnesota's experimental tech-metal extremists, THE CRINN, having formed during August of 2004 in St. Paul, MN. What better way to celebrate the milestone of a decade long existence, than to release some scathing new material!? THE CRINN did just that, as 2015 marks a huge return for the band with the recent release of their sophomore album, 'Shadowbreather', which went live on Bandcamp April 28, 2015, and has since received some well deserved high marks and critical acclaim from the metal media.
"...this is the kind of record where the music is so complex, jarring, and unpredictable, that attempting to do a track-by-track review or to dissect individual tracks is pretty pointless. It's an intense experience that insists on being listened to intently, as opposed to being played while doing anything else besides headbanging violently and attempting to destroy faces and eat light bulbs... What I'm really trying to say is that you really need to hear Shadowbreather, even if you aren't typically a fan of this style. This record rules!"
- Austin Weber, No Clean Singing
"...when an album's sole critique lies with the reviewer desiring more, it is impossible to describe the offering as anything other than a triumph. Shadowbreather is comprised of nine savage slabs of brutal mathcore that should catapult The Crinn to alpha status within the genre pack." [4/5]
- Scott Murphy, Heavy Blog is Heavy
"But there's oh so much more to the band than simple Dillinger references. Adding to the sense of frenzy are grindcore influences that inject some blistering speed in from time to time. There's a strange sense of beauty to some of the grindcore influenced riffing, taking a nod from Gridlink's Longhena, and the subtle melodies of "Lurking Light" do not go without note... A successful attempt by the band to give long-time fans a new album to revel in after a lengthy disappearance, Shadowbreather is solid." [8/10]
- Kyle McGinn, Dead Rhetoric
"Have you ever been rocking your favorite album by The Dillinger Escape Plan but kept wishing that it was even more outrageous? Well, wish fucking granted: The Crinn has come from out of nowhere with tons of math-core/brain-core wankery, but saves head-bumping umph to keep ya in check."
- David Lee Rothmund, Metalsucks
"The Crinn are fucking fierce and brutal and their mathcore is unrivaled. Period. If you know the band, then you will be pleasantly pleased with Shadowbreather. If you're new, prepare to get your face ripped the fuck apart."
- American Aftermath
Shadowbreather was recorded at Signaturetone Recording with producer/engineer Adam Tucker.
From it's inception, THE CRINN decided to use an explorative writing style, without concern for genre exclusivity due to their frustration with the average and mundane, breakdown oriented metal scene. Their mixture of technical riffs, off-time grooves and jarring transitions has led to the band being labeled as mathcore, techmetal, techgrind, jazzmetal and even noodlegrind. Fans of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and PSYOPUS owe it to themselves to give THE CRINN a listen!
