It's been nearly four years sinceLucifericonlast released a record, 2012'sThe Occult Watersdebut. Released to critical acclaim byBlood Harvest Records, that mini-album displayed a "new" band of metal scene veterans - who've done time in such bands as Destroyer 666, Pentacle, Malicious Dream, and Excision among others - who deeply understood the Metal of Death and proceeded to offer a unique, more atmospheric twist on it. Now, onMay 2ndviaBlood Harvest,Lucifericonreturn with another wholly satisfying mini-album appropriately titledBrimstone Altar. With two tracks on one side of 12" vinyl and an an 11-minute epic on the other,Brimstone Altarquickly explodes into being with a sepulchral lurch 'n' crunch that immediately bewitches the listener. From there, the twists and turns flow fast and freely, the band's death metal now blackened to a crisp and robustly recorded, allowing every evil nuance to spill from the sound field and further bewitch the eardrums. As the record progresses, it soon becomes apparent thatLucifericonhave mastered the art of the "patient payoff," for their songwriting here builds detail upon subtle detail despite the obvious aggression employed. Consequently, the atmosphere that so guidedThe Occult Watersis recast in a distinctly different light, one where the listener is caught in a slipstream and dragged into a distant, nameless vortex. A statement from the band reads: "It's been a long time coming since we had to overcome the loss of two drummers during 2014 and 2015. So,Lucifericonis very pleased to announce that the release of theBrimstone AltarEP is upon thee. We dare say the three tracks on this EP capture some of the darkest vibes in the genre, very much like our first output, but we have improved the sound on this release a lot to generate maximum darkness! Revel!"Cover and tracklistingare as follows:
