DROWSE: Listen gripping sophomore album 'Cold Air' in its entirety
March 10, 2018
Kyle Bates's Portland-based slowcore project Drowse has never shied away from his demons. His nom de plume's sophomore effort, Cold Air, is a testament to that steadfastness. Cold Air is a painstaking cross-section of the tolls and trials of addiction.

Cold Air continues to exorcise the very same demons that drove Bates to forming Drowse in 2013. Inspired by the fallout of a 2013 mental breakdown, Bates formed Drowse as an outlet through which he could channel his personal strife and struggles through music. With a sound that pools from the same emotional tumult of contemporaries Mount Eerie, Grouper, Planning For Burial, and Have A Nice Life, Drowse has grown into a nuanced profile of the human condition-imperfections and all.
Cold Air was painstakingly recorded over nine months in Bates' home, a space that makes cameos throughout the album in the form of field recordings and background occurrences. Recorded during a time characterized by as much self-realization as self-destruction, the album finds Bates at his most vulnerable. Written during his spiral into and eventual recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, Cold Air finds Bates fumbling towards normalcy one track at a time.
Influenced by the writings of Anne Carson and Karl Ove Knausgaard, Cold Air is an album that frames big picture ideas within intimate, often shame-ridden experiences-a nose broken while blackout drunk, a seizure followed by feverish hallucinations, a father's stroke, the death of a close friend. Cold Air is the sound of the uncertainty beneath our lives surfacing.
