DOMINICK FOX & THE HIGH HEELS: "Be Cool."
September 24, 2017
SEPTEMBER 21, 2017 ' Brooklyn, NY is known as being a mecca for unique and innovative creative people. The borough is rich in culture, originality, and acceptance for pioneers who dare to be different. It comes as no surprise that genre-defying rockers Dominick Fox & The High Heels call this eclectic city home. The dizzying alternative-indie-pop sound is the musical brainchild of the projects namesake, Dominick Fox, a Long Island-born punk with an affinity for pop and soul. Today he's unleashed his debut single, "Be Cool," that'll entice listeners to simultaneously throw up middle fingers and dance. It's an empowering anthem about not caring what anyone thinks, according to Dominick it stemmed from the idea that "Being cool isn't accomplished through constant attempts at social approval and/or trying too hard, it's when you say fuck it and do what you want to do."
Listen to "Be Cool" on Idobi Radio:
"Between songs written from a place of confidence through self expression, catchy beats, and one-of-a-kind vocals, including a falsetto you've gotta hear to believe, you'll be hooked from minute one." - Idobi Radio
Tour Dates:
9/27 ' Rough Trade ' Brooklyn, NY (w/Best Behavior)
The project is helmed by Dominick Fox, who with the help of his collaborators has cultivated an unconventional and exciting sound that's all his own ' unconcerned with labels, "staying in a lane" or "being put in a box". When asked to describe the music Dominick offered, "I guess, vaguely speaking, a lot of the tracks could be under the 'umbrella' of pop music. The songs have an indie rock 'n roll hearts, with hip-hop mindsets, and pop structure/melodies, that's all represented in different ways."
According to Dominick a lot of artists set out to achieve something specific, and a lot of times that something has already been done. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just not what Dominick Fox & The High Heels are here to do. "Overall, I want the sound to be referenced as the middle ground between Michael Jackson and The Velvet Underground" shares Dominick. Adding "It's a modern in-between take of the two. It's an art project that's led by my creative mind and backed by my close-knit team. In those ways it draws more parallels to modern hip-hop than it could to any other band; e.g. Young Lean and his team, Young Thug and Alex Tumay, even Drake and his OVO guys."
The over-arching theme to Dominick Fox's musical endeavor is a beautiful one of confidence built through self-realization and appreciation. The music is steeped with his personal mantra of "Be you, express yourself, and love because those things are important. Know that social norms and expectancies are less important". He describes those as being the 'lifeblood' of the bands song's deeper meanings, as they are principles that he truly stands for. It's also the one of the reasons as to why they chose 'The High Heels' as the band name ' which speaks to Dominick's resistance to ascribing to "gender norms". He shares, "Since I was young, whenever I perform I often dance around, shake my hips, etc. I never put much thought to it but constantly heard things back about it, both positive comments and of course ignorant criticisms. But I started realizing performing the way I always have like that was a vessel for a bigger belief I have within for gender fluidity." He adds, "More specifically the WANT for someone to immediately find my project's name androgynous became a priority, because my art is. I find it super interesting when people expect it to be a band of girls or whatever! I think that fairly represents our weird take on pop music."
With sights set on making a cultural impact and being a voice for the weird, outcasts, and underdogs, Dominick Fox & The High Heels are taking a seat at the millennial rebel table.
