Stefano Peresson (Markonee) interview
Hey there guys, thank you for your time to do this interview. How is the tour going so far ?

Hello there, I'm Stef, touring gives us a lot of chances, even if crossin' Europe under the rain is not so easy, but gigs and people are hot and we had a lot of fun in Paris. When we finished the gig we found Fiona Flanagan in the backstage, she made compliments to all and invited us to jam with her and WINGER band. Winger and Fiona hadn't been performing together since 1989 !
*Editor's comment: Just to underline that Fiona was once married with Beau Hill

Tell me a bit about MARKONEE, the story of the band, how long do you know each other, about the decision to form a band.

I started the band along with Carlo, Ivano and JJ came later, and Gabriele was the last one to join the band, a couple of years ago. I've spent all my life being in a band, hard rock and hair metal weren't so popular when MARKONEE started up. The clubs only wanted new metal or black/trash/death kind of stuff, but in 2003 THE DARKNESS became popular, so we gained more space in music clubs and we found a record deal in Italy. Now it's totally different, we just signed a record deal with the British label Escape Music and See The Thunder has a worldwide distribution, we landed on iTunes too and we're touring across Europe with WINGER.

I know that you got your name from Guglielmo Marconi, how you ended up with a decision like this? Does it have to do only because of the title of your debut album?

I've always been fascinated by smart and intelligent people, more than soccer players or top models. Marconi was a genius and he was born in Bologna, our home town, but it was Zakk Wylde who suggested the name of the band. I changed the spelling just for a matter of convenience, so that when you type MARKONEE (Lithuanian spelling) on Google for example, the band can be instantly found. MARKONEE is a pretty uncommon name. No, the Spirit Of Radio concept came later . I was reading a book on Marconi's life, his life was very adventurous, WW1 and Nobel prize, a couple of weddings, a stupid boy whose inventions have completely changed the world! It's like a weird tale.
*Editor's comment: After the WW1 and the Nobel Prize his political ideas were really weird as well.

Your album See The Thunder is released for about a month now, what is the feedback you are receiving so far?

A lot of As and no Fs !! We've sold many CDs at our gigs so far, the response seems pretty good, but I don't want to think about it, all I want to do is playing my guitar and do good solos.. ahahahah!

Any plans to shoot a video clip, and if yes, which track do you have in mind?

We are planning to do a video of the song See The Thunder, but we're touring right now and we don't know what are the label plans, when we go back home we'll see what happens . I'm thinkin' about an American director though.

Now that you are on tour to promote this new effort, what is your impression you get? Do the people seem to like it? Also what is the support that you get from your own country?

I HOPE SO!! People sing our songs, last night we were in Holland, the place was packed and among the audience there were a lot of people from Belgium who had seen us the night before. All these people were singing along with us even if they didn't know the songs quite well! We're kinda proud of this! When we left the venue we heard a car stereo playing The Cross Between The Lines in the distance : a really nice sensation! When I think about Italy there's only one thing I can say: Often when we go on stage, the crowd roars the headliner name, but when we finish our set they usually yell MARCONI. This is a GREAT satisfaction!

How does it feel to tour together with Kip Winger?

Kip is a man of few words, he's gentle and smart, he's got a strong personality and he's very deep into the music business, Rod is a piece of rock history and he's a great teacher for us, Johnny seems the most European and his guitar playing has improved so much from the first time I saw him in 2006, and now he just joined GIANT... What can I say about Reb? He's the most funniest guy I've met in the music biz, and he played with a lot of my favourite bands: DOKKEN, NIGHTRANGER,ALICE COOPER and more... his guitar playing is terrific.

The first time I saw the cover, especially the cover, I guessed that this would be 70's progressive rock, your logo took me back to bands like YES or BUDGIE. It is a bit tricky... Was that designed so in purpose or did it just happened? I saw you, Stef on a live performance for Italian TV, you reminded me of Geezer Butler back in 70's.

Hey Maria I'm not that old, I'm just wise... ahahahah! We are comfortable with YES especially, the logo and the artwork were conceived by Oderso Rubini, he likes 70's stuff like Studio Hipgnosis. They did the most beautiful record covers, unfortunately they dissolved in 1983... Oderso has made a great job though, didn't he?
*Editor's comment: Well.. I will just refer to some other covers by Hipgnosis.... See also RAINBOW Difficult To Cure, LED ZEPPELIN Coda, and BLACK SABBATH Never Say Die....

How come and you approached Beau Hill for the production of See The Thunder tell us a bit more about this cooperation.

In a very simple way, I e-mailed him, I had no news for 3 months, and then one night a mail came: This is Beau, I like the tracks, we can work on them. I tried to phone my bandmates but I was cryin' from happiness.

Nothing left to say, Beau is a genius.

So, having Beau Hill behind the console, does this mean also that you are already do moves in order to approach the audience across the Atlantic?

Of course, See The Thunder will be available on iTunes in January with an extra track... I can't say anything more.

When the tour is over what are the plans for MARKONEE?

We're plannin' another tour, in US in January and western Europe in springtime, wheels are turning so fast, if this is a dream please DON'T WAKE US UP!

Thank you very much for the time to answer these questions, is the something you would like to add?

Yes, to all the people of METAL TEMPLE, buy See The Thunder, come and see our shows, learn more about MARKONI and the most important thing: We're from Bologna, but SPAGHETTI ALLA BOLOGNESE don't actually exist ahahahahahahahah!
