Machinery

Stockholm based MACHINERY just recorded a promo video for Cold, the opening track of latest release The Passing. In order to get some information about the video and to catch up what's been going on around MACHINERY lately, METAL TEMPLE scheduled a meeting with the band that went from a not very serious rehearsal to a nice conversation with vocalist Michel Isberg.

Michel Isberg (Machinery) interview
You just recorded the first promo video for Cold, opening track of latest release The Passing. Tell me about the video?

Well, it was cold for real... The location was a boat hangar and there was no heat or ventilation since it's just a warehouse or storage facility. So, in a sense I don't fake my expressions in the video. The song itself is about anxiety and we wanted to capture that on the video-shoot. And that's how the director came up with the whole idea. The recording was made in mid October and that particular day nature wasn't especially keen on us. We started the shoot at 6.30 in the morning, Saturday and went on until long after midnight, then the same procedure the next day. We only had the weekend to record so it was two long and cold days. The crew for the recording was very limited, mostly just friends and family so we all had to help with the lights, smoke and wind effects, make-up (laugh), building the tracks for the camera and everything else necessary to keep going.

Who did it?

Martin Gustafsson who's a friend of the band and he seemed to be the natural choice for our debut video. It was also his first music video before this he's only been doing short films. Jenny Klingwall, Fredrik's sister, was supposed to only do the make-up but since we were short-handed we didn't have any problems keeping her busy as well as assistant Peter The Great, second photographer.

The Passing was released in May this year, how has the response been?

The response has been really good apart from Sweden, in average it's at least 8 out of 10 in every review. Especially 'Terrorizer' and 'Rock Hard' for the printed media showered the CD with commendation.

You also have gotten good response here at METAL TEMPLE do you feel that online Mag's is less important?

Online reviews are more important for several reasons, average Joe reads more what's on internet and what's more important I believe booking agents and club organizers lean heavily on what they read online. So I take this opportunity to thank Metal-Temple for the great response so far.

Are you still satisfied with the album?

Yes, absolutely. Some tracks grow and some diminish through time.

What's your favorite track/least favorite track of the album and why?

Favorite is Cold, without hesitation. But I'm probably the only one in the band feeling that way but on the other hand they don't share my awesome taste! (laughs) Cold has something special for me, it's very simple and yet intensive and that's very hard to capture when you're writing a song. Bloodline is my least favorite. Bloodline is the song I get fed up with the more I listen to it.

Anything you would want to change now?

Yes, I'm amazed that people consider us as a Death Metal band when I read the reviews. I΄ve never considered us for being a Death Metal Band or a Gothenburg Sounding, or any band that came from Sweden to be honest. So the only weapon I can use in the future is to skip growls. Nothing is decided yet but I'm very tempted to get rid of the label.

Recorded at studio Black Lounge, why did you choose that one?

It's simply that we needed a change from Necromorbus and to look for a different production. If we knew how Jonas Kjellgren was a cuddly bear we would have sought him up long ago.

What?

Well, you know the feeling when you find your best friend when you're in pre-school. It was like being in kindergarten playing catch and doing karate in the backyard throughout the recording-session.

What?

Well, we had so much fun those 5 weeks, they were over in no time and I wished we had another five weeks. It all felt natural and we never had to push the issue which gives cred for Jonas knowing what the band wants. It was clear from day one that he knew what he was doing.

You've also gone through a few lineup changes, you have a new bassplayer since the recording?

Yes, unfortunately things developed to a peak between me and Per both personally and musically, not saying whose fault it was but we simply couldn't co-operate any longer.

But we found the most cuddly bassplayer every as a replacement, Peter Berg so I'm a happy camper. PS, he plays darn good too! ...with his fingers!

Then you've added a guita rplayer to the line-up, who's he and why did you decide to add another member?

We've been discussing for years that I should concentrate on my singing but we never managed to find a suitable guitar player. We certainly done our share of auditions but maybe we scared them away since we didn't manage to keep them in the band... good marketing perhaps? (laugh) Kalle Stenberg has been a friend of the band for a long time as he also is a member of ALTAIR and we've been doing a lot of gigs with them. We always had a good time with them and one day the question was there. Why not ask him? To our delight he was very keen on the idea right from the start. But since we have had bad experience in accepting new members immediately I never forced the issue to all the obligations what a full member means, we've been kind of loose about it, feeling what we want and what does he want. All has gone really good for a period of time now so it's time to go official that we asked him to be a permanent member and he gladly accepted. Apart from this he's blonde, right handed and likes beer.

How does the songwriting process work?

Anything goes really, no particular method is preferred over the other. If it's a good idea it's our mission to capture it. The methods can vary from me doing everything from home and present to the band or we all just bang our beerbottles to our foreheads and jam the best song in the world.

Can you pick songs out of “The Passing that came from the different ways of writing?

The title track was actually never rehearsed, it was all done by me and Johan in front of Cubase. Delirium In Vengeance I did all at home and we rehearsed it through. Waiting For The Wave is a product of jamming and the band bouncing ideas back and forth while rehearsing. Deadman, is actually a product of evolution. It has shiftshaped countless of times and we've deleted 2 minutes of the song before it was finalized. Did I kill my darlings?

What influences you in the writing process?

I don't think of that very much. Subliminally I suppose it΄s things I listen to at the time.

What are the biggest differences between Degeneration And The Passing?

Degeneration, good tunes but screwed up by crappy performance and poor production. We simply didn't know what we wanted and how to do it back then. Poor Vidar had an impossible task to try to understand what we wanted. I blame that purely on us, the band. Besides that my opinion is that the tunes are somewhat less progressive on The Passing.

How will the future looks like, next album?

We've started to talk about it and maybe we'll record next year but nothing is planned or organized. We΄ve got to face reality that we are still fairly unknown and our finances are limited so we really need to think about what to focus on. What is more important, tour or an album?

Has the songwriting started?

Yes and no, we have a bunch of songs in the vault but I'm not sure I want to use any of them. There's always an idea or a riff coming up on every rehearsal but so far we haven't bothered recording them. I don't want to do things too early since we'll most likely lose momentum when the time comes.

Degeneration was released on Last Entertainment, why change to Regain Records?

We needed someone who had bigger distribution really.

Do you have any other future plans?

Well, we want to tour and do albums but as I stated before the finances decide what we can do. We outsourced things like bookings and merchandise...

Speaking of which, tell me about Razamataz?

It's our Merchandise partner. Lord Ahriman from DARK FUNERAL recommended us to them and they wanted to work with us. Lord Ahriman is responsible for the album layout and Tee's. So it was a natural suggestion since 'Razamataz' was already in the background. If you want MACHINERY butter-knifes, bottle-openers or anything just mail in your request (laugh).

You're also signed to SSG, what's their role in your future?

As being a member of a band and trying to contact organizers of any kind you'll stand in the role of tens of thousands which makes it hard to stand out. We΄ve chose to sign up for SSG in order for them to help us getting on the road. We've received some offers since then but had to decline due to conflict of interest or finances unfortunately. Besides from that their job is to help us getting bigger exposure.

How do you feel about Regain, their work and promotion? Will you continue working with them?

Yes, of course! So far they've done an awesome job and it feels nice when you go to a place like Headbangers Ballroom and find beer-coasters with yourself on them when ordering a pint. It is little things like that that makes you love your record company.

Do you have any last words for us?

Big horns up for all metalheads out there and don't forget LETHAL is the best band in the world.

Seriously?

A good band deserves recognition.

And that goes for you as well then?

Buy our album!

Was that all?

If we play and when we play come out and see us and get your own personal opinion.

[outro] Judging from the rehearsal, it seems a little strange that this band actually managed to put together an album as good as The Passing really is. It's not that it sounded bad but the organization and determination to actually get through the songs was, well, a little out of it. In the +2 hours of rehearsal I think they got through 3 full songs, then it was jazz versions of famous Metal Tracks, Horror Movie atmosphere created by Fredrik and his keyboard or anything really BUT MACHINERY tunes. But they seemed to have a good time and if this is the way The Passing was created I fully support their behavior. So, if you're a fan of Metal (that's really the best way to describe MACHINERY) check out The Passing it's absolutely worth it.
