Luca Turilli (Rhapsody) interview
Hi my name Jorge Zamudio, Aka Zarto, I'm a great fan of you since always

Hi my man, thank you for these words.

I saw you when I was fourteen, now I'm 24, the Show was amazing...

(Laughs), for you yes, but for us it was unbelievable bad (Laughs), we wanted to escape, it was like a zombie's movie, there were not security service, well there was, but not the kind of guys who were very good, and when we were ready to go out, the hands came out like zombies, but it was amazing, and then...the electricity went down..

Yeah, we had to sing along

And it was because one guy threw the beer over the console, and I remember that concert for that, I will remember it forever (Laughs).

Ok let's start with the questions, first of all, it's almost mandatory to ask: Rhapsody of Fire, has been one of the most important bands in the last 10 years, influencing the whole neoclassical metal scene and making bands that want to be like ROF. What do you think about taking different roads now with your former band mates?

Sure, this was an absolutely friendly split, I'm a big friend with Alex, Fabio, who I consider one of the best singers around the world, it was an honor to compose with them. After we finished the saga, we felt it was time to finish this artistic cycle, after 15 years, in 1997 we published "Legendary Tales", but really we worked together was 20 years, in 1993, we were able to work together for so long without splitting, because if you check the music industry, we are one of the bands that you can count with your fingers that were able to resists for so long working together.

and that besides all the problems that you had along...

Absolutely, with all the problems of the name, all the legally issues, that you're not allowed to speak about, anyway, this slowly turned down the "fun sector", there was not the same fun at composing together, you did not have the same stimulation, think of an artist, who tries to express music, and then it turns only business, things we had to face. But the love we had for the music, as for me, my love always goes to the composition, the moment we played on stage our songs, and the fun was getting lower, so we talked about the splitting, before the band went close to the point of no return, and first it was more or less serious, then we unified our energies, we release the albums till the end of the saga, because it's like writing a book for 15 years, and then stop writing missing the last chapter, so we finally decided to do it, and the it was naturally spontaneous the separation, and it was at the very end, that we decided to go with this separated bands, and we were not able to ask each other to quit the name of ROF, or the logo, you can't imagine how much money means (laughs), because when we had the hardest of times, my family, the families of the other members, Alex, had to put money and make sacrifices  to save the band, and, to be able now, at this moment to keep the name and the logo, so I want to emphasize in the friendly nature of the splitting.

So after all this you still consider them as a family

Of course, even when composing the last album I wasn't able to talk to them, or the rest of the world (laughs), people may think that in the musical business the friendship may not be 100% when working, Who said this? I've been friends with Alex MANY years before founding ROF, so you will always have many differences artistically, musically, but if in the end you decide to go on separate ways, this means not that you're not friends anymore.

Ok, very clear, now let's focus on the new band: you have a new drummer, friends who have worked with you before, an amazing singer, what do you think about working with this new band?

Ahhh!!!, it's amazing, because, with Patricio and Dominique, that followed me, I was already used to work with them, and there's big affection between us, and more now that after the split the decided to follow me, it was very kind, and for the new members, it was particular We found the singer thanks to Fabio, because when we decided the split, I was thinking about making other things, liked working for the movie soundtracks, trailers, music, but I prefer to go with the mist of Metal Impact, but then I had the purpose to do something in the vein of AVANTASIA, working with famous singers, something different. Then Fabio came to me and told me "check this ALESSANDRO CONTI, you will like it for sure, he can get some highs", that reminds a little bit of Michael Kiske, which happens to be one of my favorite singers, my favorite albums of HELLOWEEN are the keepers I and II, so immediately I watched some YouTube videos of this singer, and I said "WOW It's amazing", but that was not enough for me,  because I like to work with singers able to give some different vocal colors, so I went to see the singer, and asked him to sing for me like 100 songs (laughs), but it was a really large amount of songs, because I needed to be sure of his voice, for the sake of the project in general, so if the singer has many abilities, the compositional range is wider, for me it was very important. I asked him to sing all, from pop to metal, to Crimson glory, Queensryche, Celine Dion, many many others, and I was really amazed, especially when I heard his operatic color, and then I discover that he was First Tenor in the school of Pavarotti, so then I threw this Avantasia concept, and told Alessandro that he was the new singer of LT Rhapsody. He is the new member of the family now. The drummer took the place of Alex Holzwarth, whom to schedule problems with working on both bands had to leave, and thanks to our new Sound Engineer, Sebastian, he knew Alex Landenburg, and he has worked with bands Like Stratovarius or Anihilator, and he's technically fantastic, and a great person. And it was very important to find the right people for the band, and they are the perfect family to start this new adventure.

That leads me to my next question, ALESSANDRO CONTI, being so versatile, has inspired you a new musical style, or you incorporated him to something that you already in mind?

After hearing him sing to me, like I told you, 100 songs, not to torture him (laughs), it was because to me was essential to study his voice, that's why I told him to sing songs of many genres, to study what's his best, and I only started composing, knowing the range of the singer, knowing how high can go, or low, and knowing his expressivity, it was very easy for me to compose for someone like him, it was an amazing process.

Well, The cover was made for a fellow countryman; can you explain it in your own words?

Oh yeah!, the cover was made by Felipe Machado, We know him before, he has worked with us in ROF, I have always admired his work, and his ethical as a worker and as a person, he's a very nice guy, and puts a lot of effort in what he does, as you can easily see.

I've read how you composed this release, but please explain it to our readers, how hard has been doing this album?

I define it like a Spiritual ignition, because it was for sure, something to remember for all my life, it was complicated, in order make the album sound Cinematic, full of orchestral arrangements, because we like to orchestrate every single instrument of the songs, and I don't like external arrangements, like many bands do, but that's style, in September I started doing the compose, because I did not have any songs written, we had to start from Zero, so I had to close myself at home for like 4 months, working like 15 hours per day at minimum, and I had like always physical problems, but when you had a project like this in mind, when you love your job, you don't feel stressed, of course in the end I felt it (laughs), because there were 4 months of compositions, and 4 more months dealing with the studio, I mixed the album along with my Sound Engineer Sebastian, recording solos of guitar, keyboards, completing arrangements, all at the same time, and running because for me it was very important to release the album before the summer, in order to start the tour, and we did it at the limit, at with the support of Nuclear Blast, it was incredible.

How important was for you to keep counting with Nuclear Blast Records behind you?

It's a different record company, it's an amazing relation; it's not the typical like record company /artist, it's something more, they are all my friends, it's like a family, they have never asked for a note before I have finished the work, they totally comprehend my job, they always have been very supportive, and always have been behind my back, giving me space to create new music without pressions, it's very nice to work with people like this guys of NB.

What are your plans to promote this album around the world? Is the social network a crucial aspect in this quest?

Sure, we need to have contact with the people, in order to make the fans to buy the album, of course we'll use the social networks, and it will be a mistake not to use it, even when you have a new singer to promote, you need to spread it out; but this could be a double edge weapon, making a less impact in the constant and traditional use of the musical business, but we'll use everything we have at reach to make bigger this band.

How do you expect that the fans receive this new concept of two Rhapsody?

The fans are amazing people, always with the curiosity of "how will it sound?" "Will it be good?" But that's exactly what we want, people to interact with us, always wanting more, that's a great stimulation to keep on working for as long as I can.

What are your final words for the Metal-Temple readers?

Expect the greatest and longest tour I've ever made, lot of visual surprises, lots of scenic stuff, and always remember: the band needs the fans, I love all of you, thanks for the chance of making an interviews in this magazine, there will come an exciting time, STAY CINEMATIC!!!!.
