Ian ''Lemmy'' Kilmister

Motorhead

It is almost impossible to make an e mail interview with MOTORHEAD. You cannot write enough questions to cover all the things that you would like to ask the Metal totem called Lemmy. But the face-to-face interview with him at Manchester was not possible so a string of questions was a nice arrangement by the band's tour manager. Anyway read what he answered...

Ian Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead) interview
We had the chance to attend your concert at Manchester Apollo; how does it feel performing in a sold out concert?

Great!

In the current tour you have THE DAMNED and GIRLSCHOOL as supporting acts; did you have anything to do with the selection of these bands?

Yes!

Expanding the previous question; did the fact that you had a connection with both bands affect your choice?

Yes!

SPV is going through rough times; so, what is the status with your record contract? Are you searching for a new one?

We have to wait and see what happens.

You have a steady pace releasing one album per two years; so, can we expect the new MOTORHEAD album sometime during 2010?

Yes, you can!

What is your composing process? Are you writing while on tour or you just sit in the studio and start working on new songs?

I write in the studio mostly although I always write my idea down all the time. On tour, at home ..

Some people believe that MOTORHEAD are just copying themselves; how do you feel about this saying?

If we were copying ourselves wouldn't we be younger ?

Is the MOTORHEAD sound restrictive to your artistic freedom? Have you ever felt the need to do something different in terms of music?

I have done lots of different things: HEADCAT, Dave Grohl, CAMP FREDDY, DORO, SLIM JIM. I have all artistic freedom I need and there is.

The band possesses a real big back catalogue; how difficult is for you to prepare the setlist for a concert? Are there any songs that you wish you could leave out from the setlist? Are there any songs that you'd like to play live but for some reason you haven't?

No. not really, I'm quite happy. The fans expect us to play the old classics for sure what we do and we always throw in a couple of songs from the latest record.

You have been on the road for many years; what are the difficulties a band face while on the road with the same guys?

Boredom, fighting with knives, assassins, bad weather.

So, are the groupies the way they were back in the 80s?

No, they are much older.

Do you feel that the new bands lack of the honesty and the innocence that the 80s band had?

Yes. Probably!

Do you feel that the music nowadays is like fast food? Already written recipes and absolutely no space for experimentation?

Some of it. But some of it always was.

The current tour ends on the 19th of December in Russia; so what is next for MOTORHEAD? Any plans for summer festival?

No yet. Our next project is recording the new album.

Is there any place that you love to play live and in what countries do you feel that MOTORHEAD are mostly loved?

Anywhere where they go 'Hooray'!

You have a long and successful career in the Metal scene; if you were asked to give one single piece of advice to a new band what would it be?

Make your own mistakes! And by the way: we play Rock 'n' Roll.

Although I missed the chance to speak in person with you at Manchester Apollo I would like to thank you for your music. There are many questions that I would like to do but through an e mail this is kind of awkward. Please end this 'conversation' with a saying of yours.

You are welcome! Woop Woop! Great audience in Greece!
