Greg Smith (Over The Rainbow) interview

Interview with: Greg Smith from OVER THE RAINBOW

Hails from METAL TEMPLE webzine. Let us start with the obvious question; When was the idea to form OVER THE RAINBOW born and how did you put together the lineup?

The idea has been around for quite some time as we've all been asked about when or if there will be a RAINBOW re-union. The answer was always never because Ritchie wants nothing to do with it It was then remembered that there is another Blackmore who plays guitar! Joe met up with him in Germany and he was excited about the idea. From then the lineup came quickly. I had been playing with Joe for a long time and he knew my enthusiasm for a RAINBOW reunion, Bobby also knew my interest and since we all live close to one another and are friends that part of it came easily.

Some may face OVER THE RAINBOW with skepticism; so, can you explain to them the reason to form a tribute band to RAINBOW?

THIS IS NOT A TRIBUTE BAND! We are ALL members of RAINBOW, and the only one who wasn't has the name Blackmore and has Ritchie's blood flowing in him! What about most bands out there going by the original name with maybe one or 2 original members! Are they considered Tribute Bands? We have a right to play this music and to take RAINBOW to the next step!

What is from your point of view RAINBOW's contribution to the Metal scene?

I think RAINBOW's contribution is great. RAINBOW had a big influence on lots of currently successful bands and musicians.

You are already on the road; how does it feel playing all these classic songs after all these years? What is the fans' reaction?

It feels great playing all this great music again and to be playing it with such great musicians. The fans' reactions everywhere have been amazing! Clearly they are loving it just as much as we do!

Many are wondering and possibly asking you about Blackmore's reaction to OVER THE RAINBOW. So, what did he say about this band?

Well you'll have to get the specifics from Jurgen but I know he consulted Ritchie before agreeing to do this. Ritchie gave him his blessing.

Joe Lynn Turner said to an interview for Classic Rock that Ritchie Blackmore did now want his son to use his surname. Why do you think he reacted that way and what did convince him to change his mind?

This is not true about the surname. Here is a link (click here to read) to the article where Classic Rock Magazine sets the record straight (makes a correction).

Ok, enough with the surrounding stories and let's talk about music. How did you choose the songs for your setlist and how long did it take you to rehearse them?

Well there is a ton of great music to choose from and it was very hard. We all came up with songs we thought would be great and chose from that. Rehearsing was another story. Before our first shows in Russia, we only had 4 rehearsals to get it all together!

What is the most difficult RAINBOW song to perform live and why?

Probably Spotlight Kid. I am a finger player and that song is VERY fast!

Are there any tracks that you would love to play live but for some reason you haven't?

There's still lot of time to do all the greats. We are still a new band and there will be many more tours!

Are there any thoughts to get a new album with music close to RAINBOW's sound?

Of course! That is what we will be working on over the winter.

Do you have any plans to film a concert for a future DVD release?

No plans as of yet.

Have you ever thought of re-recording the songs you play live and get them on an album?

Possibly in the future along with some of our new material.

What is your opinion about the Metal scene nowadays? Do you feel that the metalheads have lost their interested for the classic Metal music for the shake of all this Metalcore movement?

It depends on the country. In America it seems like the Rock scene is fairly dead, however in a country like Russia, or Bulgaria it is great!

Do you think that the feeling in music creation has been lost? I mean many believe that the new bands are on the pursuit of success through already famous sound producers and 'golden' recipes without working on creating their own personal sound.

I have not heard too much new music that I really like. There are a few bands but not many.

In one month OVER THE RAINBOW will perform live in Greece so, what can we expect from the band on-stage?

A high energy Rock show and great music!

Ok, Greg thanks a lot for your time! I am already looking forward to seeing you live in Greece.
