A night of Death Metal on Collage St. In Toronto, the Devastation On The Nation tour rolled up to The Mod Club on Saturday, October 3
rd and there was one rowdy crowd ready to go! After riding 2 and a half hours of public transit and getting something to eat just up the road, I made it there just in time for door, which basically means that i showed up just in time to wait around another hour once inside for the bands to finally start.
Out of what the crowd liked to refer to as Slamchester, UK came the first band INGESTED, who was missing vocalist Jay Evans. Guitarist Sam Yates dropped his guitar for the night and took over vocal duties and did an absolutely amazing job doing so. The band blasted through about five songs including some of their more poorly named like "Skinned and Fucked" which I must have seen about 20 shirts for and "Anal Evisceration" which closed out the night for this band.
Now the crowd is ready, we have already had the pits begin and it's time for the Swedish band SOREPTION to take stage. The second of 3 bands to be missing at least one member, SOREPTION were missing their bassist, which was later joked about as "you can't hear him anyways." Rocking 6 songs mostly taking off their newest album "Engineering The Void" the band played "I Am You" and "Reveal The Unseen" before ending their night with "March of the Tyrants" and saying goodnight to a crowd who loved them.
Our third band to have problems was ALTERBEAST who didn't even show up, no one knows why though. So following up SOREPTION was the band a lot of the crowd came to see, AEON. I first heard of AEON when they toured with CANNIBAL CORPSE and BEHEMOTH and fitting enough, they were really just a better CANNIBAL CORPSE to me live. Tonight was no exception, frontman Tommy was a real draw, turning the show into a SHOW, playing fan favourites like "Kill Them All," "Blessed By The Priest" and of course "God Gives Head In Heaven" AEON's show was coming to a close when the sound of a heart rate monitor began playing, closing out the night Tommy raises his arms as if hanging from the cross and twitches, over and over before breaking into "Forever Nailed" and saying goodnight.
KRISIUN were the highlight of the night to me, this was a 3 piece that knew how to play heavy Death Metal and keep me interested through their slightly longer set. The lights across the back of their stage formed a pentagram and the band absolutely destroyed Toronto. The pits were insane, there was no escaping it. Playing songs from as far back as their second album "Apocalyptic Revelation" and only a couple off their newest album "Forged In Fury" KRISIUN were not screwing around. Opening with "Ominous" and "Combustion Inferno" the band gave Toronto a show to remember right up until their final goodbyes and knocking down the venue with "Ravenger."
Last band on was ORIGIN and although they weren't exactly my cup of tea, they were a lot of fun to watch live. Hitting the stage with "All Things Dead" ORIGIN made sure Toronto was still awake, playing a few songs before frontman Jason Keyser went on a little rant about camera phones, telling people to turn them off if only for one song and even trying to turn off someone's for them. Said one song was "Purgatory" which got the crowd back to 100% and the pits opening up again. By the end of "Portal" and "Unattainable Zero" which marked the end of the night, there was a giant hole in the crowd in case any more pits started and people bunched together at the sides so they weren't pushed in, but it was time ORIGIN said goodnight and thus marked the end of Devastation On The Nation in Toronto.
