After being in Brazil for just over a week Warrel Dane's time in Brazil could not be better, after a good opening tour gig in Rio De Janeiro and then a good performance in Pouso Alegre MG but with a little crowd and afterwards a two not so memorable gigs one in Varzea Paulista SP and the other in Curitiba PR all due to poor sounding and infrastructure, and then they finally arrived in Limeira SP, a town with almost two hundred thousand people but with an infrastructure to hold Metal concerts to make Sao Paulo City really think about what they are doing there. When the band arrived in Limeira on time, all according with the schedule and at Bar Da Montanha they had all the stuff and crew to give all the support they needed and sound checking was on time as well, so everything was working just like a Swiss watch. Mr. Dane had a little trouble with sounding in Curitiba PR and the result of that was his voice being a bit pushed too hard, so as soon as he arrived at the bar his request was herbal tea with honey to assure his voice would be up to what was coming. I mean the man has one of the finest voice in the Metal scene.
When they finally came on stage the crowd was just ready for it, around three hundred fifty maniacs which most of them were pretty and young ladies screaming their guts out for NEVERMORE and SANCTUARY songs and they began the onslaught with "When We Pray" then "The Day The Rats" thus driving the crowd into ecstasy, "Narcosynthesis" making sure the blood would be spilled, although not being together for a long time really, the rest of the band is formed with guest musicians all from Brazil and all of them highly capacitated musicians and they did deliver an awesome performance, Thiago Oliveira guitarist of SEVENTH SEAL, Jonny Moraes guitarist of HEVILAN, Fabio Carito bassist of SHADOW SIDE and Marcos Dotta drummer of SKIN CULTURE, they all lived up to all the expectations delivering awesome riffs, drums, bass and solos, for the short space of time that they had to get together and rehearsal they really came up with the goodies, a combination of fine musicians and with Warrel Wane's voice that definitely brought all the songs mainly of NEVERMORE to its climax. The crowd was singing along, song after song, although some of the crowd were asking for some Sanctuary's songs which unfortunately was not fulfilled because Wane's voice was so damaged because of the Curitiba's gig therefore he could not perform many songs from SANCTUARY but nevertheless that did not put the moods down, on the contrary everyone was having a blood good time.
Overall it was the best performance in Brazilian soil thus far from this amazing singer and very charismatic human being that he is, Warrel Dane has made is name playing with awesome bands like SANCTUARY and NEVERMORE and now with his solo career, I had the chance to spend a little time with him and that little time has shown me that the great man and great musician he is, rumor has it that a new SANCTUARY album is on the way and this year SANCTUARY will go on tour with OVERKILL.
Warrel Dane is a fine man with a great taste for music and also great taste for food, as he told me; he is a qualified chef who loves Italian food, a man with lots of charisma and an amazing voice.
