Orange Goblin is a huge, supremely heavy band to the point of inducing numbness and this is what they proved this time (once again) at the Underworld Club together with Lord 13 and Infidel. Being such a cult Stoner band in the underground scene (and not only there) we were very eager to witness their appearance!
The concert started with Infidel, whose members where editors of the Greek Metal Hammer magazine and the guitar player was a former Acid Death guitarist. Their style contains elements from Black Sabbath, Cathedral, Black Sabbath and other stuff and they played awfully well!!! I think they had the most perfect sound from all the other bands that shared the stage of Underworld that night. The vocalist (I think it was Yiannis Pousios) was the Greek version of Messiah Marcolin since his voice strongly resembled the unique Candlemass frontman.
Lord 13 took the stage after Infidel and with their 2 guitars, their Kyuss style and their totally drunk Hard Rock 'N' Roll attitude they seemed to be conquering the audience. However they did not have such a good sound and this did not help them to fully unfold their talent.
By the time Orange Goblin were ready to take over the stage their road crew went on the stage totally drunk and started screaming and yelling for the Orange ones! Vocalist Ben Wards is a fucking majestic Viking giant! He must be over 2 metres tall and his whole bearing is really frightening, man! He was in an extremely good mood and led the whole band!
Their psychedelic 70's inspired Doom rock and rollers, covered with tattoos, offered us a supreme dirty Rock 'N' Roll night full of sweat, booze and Sabbath influences personally delivered though, Goblin riffs! We must also note that their guitarist had only a wah-wah and a distortion pedal and despite this fact he made a fabulous Rock 'N' Roll noise! They also played a small part of Metallica's "Seek And Destroy" in one of their songs.
One of the clues of the night was their desperately drunk roadie who kept messing and singing with the microphone all the time thus disrupting the guitar sound by accidentally pulling off the guitarist's cable from his pedals!
Top moments from the track listing performed that night were "Some You Win, Some You Lose", "Hard Luck", "You're Not The One (Who Can Save Rock n' Roll)" and "Aquatic Fanatic" among others. They also played a mad ZZ Top cover just before they left the stage for the first time! Then the D.J. started playing something from "Load"
and people started feeling numb, when the mad man of Orange Goblin's crew started moaning "Brothers and Sisters call back the Gods of RnR, Orange Goblin!".
Shortly after his call the Goblins went out once more and finished their set - and us of course - with a final song! There were about 200 people attending the concert that night and the club seemed to be overflowing with energy! On a whole there was a Rock 'N' Roll atmosphere spread all over the place and everyone who attended the concert had a fine time for sure!
This review goes to Vangelis "if there is no beer there is no fun!" and Greg "I will nail him to da cross if he talks about 'tallica again!" and of course all the mad Goblin fans who were there that night!!!
