Interview - Floor Jansen (Revamp) interview

Hello Floor. It's really an honour to be talking to you.

Hello, Thank you.

So, can you tell us more about the new Revamp album "Wild Card"? How is it different from your debut album "Revamp", in terms of songwriting and the recording process?

Well, the first album was written with two external songwriters because the band didn't exist yet. So I worked with Joost van den Broek whom I worked with in After Forever and a German guitar player and the three of us wrote the first album and after that I searched for band members. So with this album, the idea was to make an album with the band members and see if that would work or not and that changed the whole approach and the whole way of writing. We did do that, though, especially with Jord Otto one of the guitar player and Ruben Wijga the keyboard player and the three of us from Revamp now became the main writers and we worked again with Joost as producer who stepped in somewhere halfway in the sognwriting process to kind of guide it because it's the first time to do this. It was nice to have someone on board who has the experience with this in a different way. So yeah, that made the process different but it was really nice.  That also made the feeling of the release  a bit different because also in the time in between I got sick and it was extra-challenging to finish it while I was touring with Nightwish, so to see this come there finally after all those years is giving me a really good feeling.

How would you describe Revamp's music? Most people refer to it as Gothic Metal or Symphonic Metal, I personally don't agree with those labels. So what do you think?

I think it's more toward Melodic Metal, I don't see it being symphonic at all… And "Gothic", as far as I'm concerned, has nothing to do with any music I've ever made throughout the last 14 years. I don't see any links between Gothic and that I do, so.. I'm happy you agree *laughs*.

The new album showcases your great vocal versatility. As usual we can hear your amazing clean and operatic vocals, but this time we can also hear you growl. How did you managed to master all those different techniques?

*laughs* Thanks. I studied singing for over 6 years and I've always been a singing teacher, I've always been on top of all vocal techniques, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to that. *laughs* so yeah, I like to use many styles and be able to sing as many styles as possible.

What style do you prefer or feel more comfortable with? Clean singing or Classical singing?

It doesn't really matter to me, actually. I mean, I barely sing truly classical. I think in this genre it's been mistaken more than once, that, you know, the way that I sing, or a lot of ladies that sing with a head voice, people think that that is opera but it has nothing to do with opera,  it's a way of using your voice that I would classify as head-voice singing and not operatic singing. I barely use that type of singing on this album anyway, because it's not my personal favorite but it's just a nice touch to have every once in a while. But I don't have a favorite, I just like the variety.

So, you have many great guests on this album including Devin Townsend, Mark Jansen, Marcela Bovio… How did they end up on this record?

Well, I've already worked with Mark Jansen many times before since the After Forever days, and also in his project Mayan. I also collaborated with Epica on their new 10th anniversary DVD. And I've also worked with Devin on his Deconstruction album, so when I wrote "Neurasthenia" I thought it was definitely suitable for Devin Townsend. We also had Johan van Stratum because our bass player left before the recording process. For the choir we usually work with classically trained singers but this time we wanted to  work with experienced Metal singers so it was the three of us, me, Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion) and Daniel de Jongh (Texture).

About Nightwish, are you willing to become a permanent member if they ask you to?

If they ask me to, yes!

That would be awesome! Do you have any favorite Nightwish song to perform live?

Uhm..

Other than Ghost Love Score.

*laughs* I really like Ghost River.

Well, that's about it, thank you so much again. Do you have anything to add?

Thank you so much for supporting ReVamp. See you!
