Turanis - A Dance in the Mist album cover

TURANIS is a Progressive/Gothic Metal band hailing from the UK. Wayne is the primary musician and composer, and he is joined by many special guests. This album is his first full-length debut, and it has eleven songs. "Stranglehold" is the first. I get a strong QUEENSRYCHE vibe from the music, and the Gothic elements are also there. The combination is interesting, and although the vocalist has a tenor range, he doesn't have the power of Geoff Tate. Then again, who does?

"When a Dead Man Walks" is a bit more somber, with heavy bass guitar, and heavy hearts. Much of the somber sound also comes from the harmonized vocals. "In Nomine" has another interesting structure, but the vocals are starting to wash out from all being sung in the same range. The song length is also quite short, so there isn't much time to develop any Progressive elements. "A Timeless Chair" has haunting piano notes in the beginning, but too soon it falls back into that rut of more laments, and more depression. I get that this is Gothic Metal, so it's not supposed to be cheery, but at least shake up the sound a bit.

"The Playground" also has a varied opening sequence, and I can also here some genuine emotion in this song, but again, the overwhelming sound is just lamenting, and more lamenting. "It all Ends" has some nice vocal harmonies, as well as little more get-up-and-go. But again, the song is so very short nothing really get a chance to get developed. "Lullaby" closes the album; a short two-minutes of a very pretty sound. But, just when you think that they are headed down a particular path, the sound veers off the course. This is pretty much the modus operandus for the album.

First, consider that this album was created by one person. Now, you try doing that, and then you can give critique. I on the other hand am charged with giving said critique as a music reviewer. One of the common threads that runs through many of the songs is the similar length and pacing. The second commonality is again, that highly lamenting sound. Extrapolate these two things over an eleven-track album, and you get my point...the songs are just too similar to one another.Purchase Link:
