Megatheria
MEGATHERIA is a Post-Metal band from Colorado, USA. As far as I can tell, this is the band's debut album of instrumental music, and it has five songs. They self-describe as "an instrumental post-metal trio who weave crushing heaviness with meditative introspection, creating a hypnotic atmosphere both massive and ethereal." The album has five songs, and "Gateway" is first. The opening tones are slow and sludgy, with a heavy bottom end. The thick bass guitar notes hold much of that bottom end, but there are also some lighter, more atmospheric elements present.
Seguing into "Glass Mantis," the heavy sound drops in favor of more ethereal elements with some dark melodies. It grows heavier and darker, until David employs symbol crashes to mark its passing. I feel like I am driving alone, on a desert highway, with a lot of time to think. There is another segue into "Bathysphere," which has another slow and thickened sound. I also hear some BLACK SABBATH influence in the song, especially in the riff progressions and bass work. The song holds a steady sound throughout without a lot of variation from the core.
"Hibernation" begins with mellower tones. The song is aptly titled, because you get the sense of a sleeping bear, enjoying his long winter nap. The tones vary as the bear tosses and turns at times, and the song feels like a bit of a long jam session. "Memorial" closes the album. It has a deep groove that will get your foot tapping or head banging, whichever you prefer, and it probably the heaviest outing on the album. But, there are some lighter moments to enjoy. Overall, their sound isn't overly complicated, so it's easy to digest. The swells and retreats are a nice way to very up each song as well, and some psychedelic moments are a finishing touch.
