Abyss Vanguard
Demonized
DEMONIZED is a black metal band who formed in 1999. 'Abyss Vanguard,' is their new EP release; they have also released a demon, split, and a full length. DEMONIZED's sound is firmly rooted in black metal. Other than the instrumental intro track, 'Mali Triumphantes,' their sound isn't atmospheric, progressive, ambient or overly melodic. This is straight up chaotic black metal with death metal elements. The production and mix are on the raw side of things but there isn't much to complain about on that point considering this type of extreme sounds better with any fancy bells and whistles.
The first full song, 'Unleash The Devils Bane,' is primed for attack, groovy induced fast paced riffs form the essence of the song. The bass pops out surprisingly well, not content on being buried under the mix. It definitely makes the song heavier and even more hellish. Near the end there is a decent solo, followed by a pulverizing blackened jam session. 'Lit The Cavernous Cauldrons,' has riffs for days and has what seems to be unlimited energy. I like the vocals here, very venomous and strained with contempt for the world. Musically, this one definitely adds in the intensity of death metal. 'Sempiternity,' is all rise. It starts off already going a million miles an hour and doesn't slow down. Just when you think it couldn't possibly go faster or harder, well, it does. Then it does it again. And again. I'm pretty sure this song breaks the sound barrier at least three times. There are a few moments where the song slows slightly for slick riffs and a killer solo.
The final track is 'Blizzardy of Volcanic Sulphur,' Hopefully, I never experience the real life scenario that is the song's title but if I did, it would probably sound like this. All the elements of the album come together for the song and rain down hell, thick as fog and deadly as fire. While I feel the songs do all sound basically the same, and the band could definitely use some dynamics, there are worse ways to spend the twenty minutes it will take to listen to this EP. If raw-ish, violent black metal is your jam, this is a release that should be on your radar.
