Come Alive
Valletta
VALLETTA is a "Black 'N Roll" Band formed recently in North Carolina, USA. This is the band's debut EP, and it has six songs. "Come Alive" is the first. The main riff isn't overly complicated, but when combined with the thick Black Metal sound, it toughens up. The quarter also plays with some fancy meters as well. "Serpents of Solomon" is a slower and heavier song, with meaty bass notes to go along with the horrid vocals. The song is powerful, but could use some thickening up in the rhythm guitars.
"Saint" is dirtier and also a bit raunchier, but the song also comes with a bit of melody amidst the harrowing sounds, and I like the combination they present. "Criminal" has a powerful bite that reminds of GOJIRA. The heavy, almost industrial riff does come with a swing that keeps it in the "Black 'N Roll" category, however. "Soot & Ash" has an unabashed mid-tempo swing to it, and you can really hear the combination of Black Metal with traditional Rock that mark this genre of music. Listen to the chorus for the best example of this.
"Bringing the Worst" closes the EP. Out of the gate, this thick bass notes reverberate in your chest, and they are followed by an ugly and dangerous riff. Overall, since this is a new band, you have to give them time to find their groove. They did present six songs with various flavors and although some of the riffs were simple, that is some of the style, and you don't need overly complicated riffs to get the point across. This was a good album, and I hear a lot of potential from the band.
