Sublimis Ignotum Omni
Dead Chasm
"Sublimis Ignotum Omni" is the first full-length album from the female-fronted Italian death metal band, "Dead Chasm." This album was preceded by a self-titled mini-album. "Sublimis Ignotum Omni" was released on F.D.A. Records. The EPK refers to their brand of death metal as "morbid death metal from the depths." They manage to play up the morbidity quite well, but almost to the album's detriment. "Apparitions" kicks the album off. This track has some great riffs and chainsaw guitars from L. D. incorporates a lot of cymbal action into his style and it sounds great. The production occupies a nice middle ground between raw and clean. The star of this track, however, is the vocals from L. Her drawn-out growls in this track are a fine contribution to the morose nature of DEAD CHASM's signature sound.
The vocals in "Perpetual Realm Of Light," however, sound monotonous both in their tone and cadence. There are precious few changes in her delivery throughout the entire track. There are a few times when her vocals complemented the instrumentation. The accompaniment feels a little too safe as well. The riffs and rhythm are pretty much the standard death metal fare. "Ethereal Fragments" gets off to an explosive start with primal death metal fury. L.'s quick grunt says right off the bat that the previous song did not set a precedent. Her vocals are more dynamic this time around as well. There are also two well-placed "blech" sounds to be had. The instrumentation is also more varied. There are a few slower parts with doom-metal-inspired riffing. G.'s basslines and D.'s drums are also fun.
"Sulphuric Asphyxiation" is the highlight of the album. The songwriting is outstanding. The music mimics the sensation of asphyxiation well. The faster elements represent a racing heartbeat, while the slower parts symbolize the loss of breath and fading of consciousness. That is a perfect example of "morbid death metal from the depths." The vocals are also more drawn out during the slower moments and more urgent during the speedier passages. Except for "Sulphuric Asphyxiation," "Sublimis Ignotum Omni" is an adequate death metal album. This track helps up the score a little and this is a solid album worth listening to at least once. There aren't any glaring errors, there just isn't enough substance to make it memorable.
