Nightfall Upon the Asylum
Drama Noir
DRAMA NOIR is an Atmospheric Black/Death Metal band hailing from Greece. They formed in 2017, and this is their third album. It has nine songs, and "Intro" is the first. It's a mood setter, and the mood is foul and evil. Vocal chants combine with light symphonic elements, almost as if there was a ritual commencing. "284 Green Street Avenue" is a long song, with plenty of different elements, including Black Metal vocals, backing symphonics, and some inventive riffing. Although the sound is rich and full, it isn't overbearing like a lot of Black Metal can be. Instead, it breathes, and develops.
"Risen to Avenge" is a slower song with eerie background elements and a thick backbone of heavy, aggressive structures. The breakdown after the half-way mark is one incredibly evil sound combined with a glittering guitar solo. "Vultu Tenebrarum" is another short blast of incredibly packed sound that doesn't let up from start to finish. Harrowing elements ooze out the song like a thick black ichor, and it has just the right amount of symphonics. "Blood Wedding" is about a union of two people before the Gods of the Underworld. It has a ritualistic sound, and you can even make out some of the vocals. The chanting is what really makes the song evil.
"The Quest of the Unknown Kaddath" is another harrowing venture that refers to the story written by H.P. Lovecraft. It's about the visions of a man who sees a majestic city and wants to go there, but his visions are stopped by the Gods, who warn him of danger should he want to continue. "The Ghost Ship" also has a frightening sound, and how the band accomplishes this is a testament to their songwriting. The slow grind will wear you down, put a strain on your senses, and begin to eat you from the inside out. In fact, if you look upon the ship, your eyes will burn a hole in your head.
The title track closes the album. The sound eases in gently at first, with beautiful piano notes and soft chanting. From there, a horrid and foul sound reigns. There is a good combination of aggressive riffing and vocals with symphonic elements. Overall, this was an excellent album, and one where the band took a careful approach to the songwriting. They thought of everything and placed each element appropriately as well. It's Black Metal but is very expansive in the sense of all the sounds they presented and what they were able to accomplish.
