Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy album cover

INTO ETERNITY is a particularly known band to the Metal scene and the fact that it was going to release a brand new album was something that caught my attention. You see, I never had the chance to really spend some time listening to this band and searching for some stuff about it and The Incurable Tragedy was definitely the time to give this band the opportunity to blow my mind.

The Canadian metallers (it may sound strange, but every time I hear that a band hails from Canada I always think it will kick major ass) are alive and kicking since 1997. Debuting with Into Eternity, an album that showed the band's intentions, the band managed to earn a contract with DVS Records for the release of its sophomore full-length effort Dead Or Dreaming. Then, it was time for their best album to date, which was the amazing Buried In Oblivion (2004), which was their first album through Century Media.

After one more full-length album, INTO ETERNITY returns with its brand new, fifth studio effort. The Incurable Tragedy is a concept album, based on some personal experiences guitarist/vocalist Tim Roth had. He lost a few people that were close to him and this had a huge impact on him, making him create the background on which this release is based on. To tell you the truth, lyrics that talk about death, strong emotions related to death and the loss of beloved people are usually acceptable and may some times touch you deeply, whether you have shared a similar experience or you get lost in a song's emotional vortex.

The fact is that a whole album with such lyrics ends up sounding totally emo! I am not trying to insult Roth, but it really is tiring to hear about such subjects throughout the whole album. The Incurable Tragedy is also the less technical album compared to the band's latest releases, since the Canadian act is trying too hard to sound like some successful modern Metal bands (call me MESHUGGAH), but as you probably understand these two bands are not the same thing.

The guitar work is also reduced to a meaningless use of repetitive riffs that are incredible simpler than what the amazing Rob Doherty used to write. The fact that he left the band is probably the main reason of this. Chris Krall (ex vocalist) also left the band, something that is really obvious since he was a really talented songwriter and the lyrics were much better than the ones written in here. And let me add that all this Metalcore/Power Metal/Progressive kind of combination seems to be faulty for the band now. If you want a dysfunctional version of MERCENARY, check them out.
