Blue Ocean Event
The Cassini Projekt
THE CASSINI PROJEKT (TCP) is a one-man band, set up by Alex McDonnell to create rock music without boundaries, allowing him to experiment with a wide variety of genres, filtered through a particular style, enamored with the grandiose, irrational, and esoteric...all of which is encapsulated perfectly on the release of a remastered version of "Blue Ocean Event" on July 18th 2022. The album contains twelve tracks.
"Exile" leads off the album. It begins with a thumping bass line and shouted vocals. It falls somewhere within the realm of Hard Rock, and has a good deal of melodies. The speed up passages sound just a little more like Punk Rock to me, with that elevated punch. "Hells a Place" opens with a slower pace of steady bass and rhythm guitars before that energetic pick-me-up feeling comes along. Following the blistering pace, it slows just a bit, to take in an expressive lead guitar solo. "False Down" features clean guitars and some strong vocal harmonies. The melodies in the guitar work are also excellent.
"The End of Everything" opens with some fantastic guitar work, but it seems a bit out of place with the mellow tones in the song. It moves forward with calm, easy-listening melodies that remind the listened that s/he really doesn't have a care in the world. "Cauterise" begins with dark electronic keyboards that lead to some odd chord progressions. The song rides the fence between hope and despair, often dipping to a side and then back to center. "Neurotic Insomniac" is an odd song. It's a slow and somewhat sad song for the most part, but the vocal harmonies after the keyboard solo are layered with positive tones. The flute notes add to the strange sound.
"Fight to Believe" is another sad offering, with acoustic guitars and doleful vocals. Alex reaches down and belts out the chorus closing in at the half-way mark. The sound lingers just a bit too long for my liking. "The Sacred Song" is a warm breeze on a cold spring day, bringing life around to your frosty bones. The little melody is pleasing and catchy, and you could sing along to it while you lay your head back and rest. "Lightning Tesla" opens with a big punch of sonority, distorted guitars, and some really nice bass work. This instrumental represents the harder side of the sound on the album.
"Fight to the End" closes the album. It's a mid-tempo rocker with a heavy bottom end. The middle section has some really powerful and groovy riffs, and it ends on a building crescendo. This album was advertised as "rock music without boundaries." Indeed. Many of the songs did have catchy elements, even though some were quite sad. The album features Rock music, but also some Folk Music, and even one or two songs with Punk influences. Normally, I would like the diversity presented, but the result is an album that really runs the gamut between several styles of music, and doesn't have a core identity. Still, many of his hooks were on par and I enjoyed most of the songs. It was a lot considering he is a one man band.Purchase Link:
