OPENSIGHT are a cinematic metal band known for suspense, spy themes, action and enigmatic passages throughout their music. Released back in January 2022 the band released their new album titled "Mondo Fiction". The album was mixed by WILL MAYA (The Answer, Breed 77, Panic Cell and Adrian Smith) and was produced by the bands front man IVAN DAVID. This is their second full album release which raises the bar with 70's car chases and plot twists in a murder mystery. The band revel in genre film conventions for their sound and visuals and present them as a form of entertainment.
The album opens with "In Here With Us" and right away this feels like the opening sequence from a movie. A little eerie but then the vocals come in with the heavy riffing stomping along. The song goes from heavy to what sounds like lounge music. It then goes back to the heavy side of things again and from listening this the band seems to be full of surprises. This was a bit of a fun opener.
Next up we got "The Great Silence" which has a bit of a funky style intro to it like one of those old detective shows. Some catchy riffs here and the vocals sound great here. A very nice chorus section and plenty of smooth bass lines throughout this track with a wah pedal coved guitar solo over it at times. The heavy lifts up again for one last chorus. With the drums and guitar building it up we got "Stained Remains". The song has got a lot of energy to it. A bit of a hint of a movie battle music with this one. There is a cool frantic middle section and the lead guitar work is just great and it even as a sinister sounding outro to it.
With its 70's spy thriller vibes (sort of like a 007 James Bond movie) we got "Curses". Those heavy guitars and drums help to build this one up and the song has a nice flow to it. With a bit of a sing along chorus here this makes for a really fun song. It then goes back to that 70's 007 James Bond spy thriller vibe to close out with lots of those really smooth bass lines. With a really cool lead guitar line from the start we have the track "Villian". The song plays out like the theme music for the movies antagonist. Some heavy grooves to be found here and a sing along chorus too with some pretty cool lead guitar lines present throughout. This track does remind me of a bad guys big song from a DISNEY movie.
The track "Thunderball" acts as the big finale of this album and is a very stylish song. There are some fun vibes here with that 70's spy thriller feel coming back. The composition works well here and everything here fits well. But this song does act like the closing credits to this suspenseful movie. OPENSIGHT are a band that clearly like to have a lot of fun with their music. The songs here on "Mondo Fiction" do feel like a different scene in a movie. There is a lot going on in each song which makes for an enjoyable listen. Honestly though I got a lot of GHOST vibes from this band, that is if GHOST were influenced by movie scores and soundtracks. But this album really is like a fun metal album mixed with those classic noir vibes.
