Kalahari - Theia album cover

From their Facebook page, "KALAHARI is a metal band born from an idea that finds its identity in 2017. Powerful break-downs and galloping riffs are alternated with acoustic arpeggios and sinuous melodies. The lyrics have social and existential themes. The True Italian Metal!" "Theia" contains five tracks.

The title track leads off the album. It opens with background ambiance and some somber guitar chords. Then, the full sound kicks in with a harsh scream. The vocals in the verses are clean and the sound is heavy and aggressive. Harsh vocals come into play at the breakdown passage. "Followers of the Lich" is a shorter and slower song, allowing the sound to slowly seep into your bones. Bass guitar note can be clearly heard, and the vocals and an exchange of cleans and harsh. But, the guitar work is fairly simple. Another breakdown can be heard with harsh vocals. It seems the band has their sound down pat.

"Zombie Night" is a quick two-and-a-half minutes of energy combined with aggression. The cadence is predictable, and almost sound like Alt Metal. The guitar solo however is nicely done. "I am the Mountain" is an over six-minute track. Opening with clean guitars and soft vocals, the passage is smooth and clear. It opens up a bit in the chorus, with emotional vocals. The mid-tempo pace here doesn't really allow the song to get off the ground, but the melodies are simple and easy to listen to. A scream leads to a guitar solo that follows the melody line quite well.

"Cabled Core" closes the album, with a hastened pace, and heavy instrumentation. The chorus is where the really push the sound, but these are riffs that you have heard before. I get that since they are new band, they wanted their debut EP to be somewhat safe, but you need to find ways to distinguish yourselves from the thousands of other Metal bands out there playing in this style. The band does have potential but they need to expand from the simple riffs and take some chances.
