On April 24th, 2020, I AM DESTRUCTION released "Nascency." I AM DESTRUCTION is a brutal death metal band from Texas that formed in 2013. In 2018, they had released an EP titled "Violence Devours," which included two previously released singles. "Nascency" will be their debut full-length album. With that business out of the way, let's get into the review!
I AM DESTRUCTION is influenced by bands such as DISENTOMB and ABORTED, which is very apparent in their music. Almost every track is a well-done mix of slam and technical death metal. Even when the tracks aren't at a breakneck tempo, the music still relentlessly beats you. That's the beauty of slam. Guitar solos are pretty frequent on this album and sit high above the low end from the guitars and bass. The vocalist shows a good range, with gutturals, highs, pig squeals, and everything in between.
"Primo Incisum" is a good intro track because it gets the idea of the band across very well. Most of the first minute is a clip of a lady in distress, but the rest of the track is full of slam riffs and chugs. "Propagated by Abnormality" showcases the band's technical death metal influences, with awesome riffs throughout. It leads right into "Ruinous Phantasm," which is much the same. With this track, like with many on this album, I appreciate that the band starts with a fast pace and ends with a slower pace, without losing any intensity.
The middle tracks, comprising of "Burgeoning Adversary," "Divine Infestation," and "Consequent Forfeiture," are all solid, filled with heavy and technical riffs that are unique to each track. However, the dense nature of the music could have benefitted from an instrumental track like "Existence in Decay" placed earlier in the album. After "Gehenna's Beckoning" is "Dolor Perdition," another instrumental. An unnerving voice insistently speaks to the listener while a purposely fuzzy chug riff builds in the background. While I liked it as an instrumental, I wish it was placed earlier on the album. Last is "Nascency," the titular closing track. It suitably closes out the album with a slam riff.
Overall, I recommend this album to fans of brutal death metal and slam. I AM DESTRUCTION combines their influences very well on this record. It's a fun album made especially impressive because It's their debut.
